Ok, so i just finished watching Apocalypto by Mel Gibson, I just absolutely loved it, i was supposed to go out to the club tonite, but my throat fuckin hurts like a sonofabitch, so i watched Apocalypto, let me just say i thought it was brilliant, it was very entertaining, it kept me on the edge of my seat, its a def. buy on DVD for me.

any one else have opinions on the film

I have opinions on the director - This man is a misogynistic, homophobic, racist anti-semetic religious nut job. And since Mel Gibson's bank account gets bigger with each DVD sale or broadcast of his movie, I'll skip it.

Mel sez:
Do I sound like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them? I think not.

I'll apologize when hell freezes over. They can fuck off

A woman should be home with the children, building that home and making sure there's a secure family atmosphere

^ Not to mention that this particular movie portrays the Mayan people (which being from Guatemala, the birthplace of that civilization I consider myself pretty well versed on the subject) absolutely wrong.

Let me tell ya, with the indigenous people of my country (Mayan descendants), that movie was an outrage.

He, Mel G, should be locked up in some nuthouse or something, alongside Tom Cruise.

I really liked it! I was going to cry if he didn't make it in time to save his wife & baby in that hole in the ground.

Didnt Gibson apologize for the insults? perhaps it doesnt matter, but I liked most of his old movies and really want to watch Apocalypto.

I haven't seen it but I have a hard time getting past what he has said in the past. What is the movie about?

I thought it was an amazing movie too, despite the fact that Mr. Gibson might be a nutcase.

Apocalypto IS an Amazing Movie but, probably not for the reason the original poster considers it to be. Apocalypto is brilliant almost CLINICAL propaganda. Mel Gibson would have made a great filmmaker for Hitler. Apocalypto is almost scary in that a guy like Mel Gibson, a guy who is not famous for being all that bright, produced such a movie.

To understand my position, you have to read this sociology study I read in college about the effectivenes of PERSUASION/PROPAGANDA. The study found that if you distracted a subject WHILE you were trying to persuade that subject of something, the subject was more likley to accept what you were trying to convince them of.

In the movie Apocalypto, the "love story" between the adducted villager and his family and the quest of the abducted "villager" to get back to his pregnant wife and child is THE DISTRACTION. Now, once you have the distraction, what in Apocalypto is the PROPAGANDA? What is it that Mel Gibson is trying to CON you into accepting?

In my opinion, the CON, the PROGANDA in Apocalypto is that the Mayan civilzation deserved to be destroyed because the culture had become an abomination. Mel Gibson's propagand (in my opinion) is that the Mayan Culture had become ungodly and it deserved to be destroyed by "AGENTS OF GOD", just as Rome had become UnGody when Rome was killing people for sport in stadiums.

In my opinion, the PROOF of my position is that the scene at the very end of the movie when the abducted Villager was ultimately SAVED when the Mayan Soldiers chasing him saw The Spanish landing on the beach. Mel Gibson makes a very definitely point of highlighting THE PRIEST standing up in the boat heading to the shore from the Spanish ship. There are TWO close-up shots of A Catholic Priest standing in the boat as The Spanish row to the shore. The clear assumption to be made is that God's Agent, the Spanish Priest, saved the adducted Villager from being another one of the thousands of human sacrifices of the UnGodly Mayans.

Even though I can see through Mel Gibson's attempt to preach religious dogma, I still think Apocalypto is a brilliant movie. The movie is so subtle, I think the majority of the people who see the movie will have no idea that Mel Gibson has planted religious crap in their heads.

The major objective of The Spanish in South America was to LOOT the land for gold an silver, not to convert the Mayans to Christianity. And, when you consider how many South Americans the Spanish killed in pursuit of "treasure", it is pretty fucking hard to believe that the Mayans could have been any more UNGODLY than the fucking Spaniards.

The Children of Missionaries claiming to convert the Mayans probably became rich landowners who enslaved the Mayans just at the children of the Missionaries who went to Hawaii became rich landowners who enslaved and abused the Hawaiians. The movie "The Hawaiians" is an incredible movie that illustrates how the Hawaiian culture was destoryed by the Missionaries and how the children of the Missionaries ended up being the rich landowners controlling Hawaii.

Compare The Mayans practicing sacrifices because of their religious beliefs to Rome killing people for entertainment. In a large number of primative cultures to be an "offering" to the Gods was considered an honor, something some people in some cultures volunteered to do.

Hey LatinoStar... I have the DVD, and I'm from Mexico (where the most of the Maya lived, although they didn't live in the region where I'm from.). I thought the movie was great! I had a lot of fun watching it.

What if it's historically innacurate... it's a movie! not a lesson in history. Great piece of cinematography.

About Mel Gibson, he can be an asshole for all I care, but his movies are awesome.

there lies the problem, to people who don't know shit about the Maya (or any indigenous group for that matter) Apocalypto IS a history lesson. They take all the lies and assume they are true. It's horrible! It's no better than when the only gay character that shows up in movies and TV is the flaming hair stylist with sass. Gipson claimed to have done research for the movie but sometimes I feel he just took the Aztecs to Guatemala.

Sorry if im late on this, but i just saw it and it was very good. I didn't pay to much to the history aspect, but i did enjoy the story. Rudy Youngblood was fantastic in the movie, very cute guy!

The end was incredible when it cut to the arrival of the Europeans.

Films like this with historical themes baffle me sometimes. I can't understand the reasoning behind filmmakers fiddling around with reality, i.e. strangling the true history when making a film historically accurate in the first place would be no harder and have no detriment to the story.

As I have no real deep knowledge of Mayan/Aztec culture, I quite enjoyed the film for the story - but some geniuine insight into the reason for the sacrifice and a bit of historical accuracy as to which culture did what would not go amiss.

Still, not the first historic nonsense and won't be the last.
