Wow this movie looks so epic and grand in scope i get chills everytime i see it on TV. The cinematography is breathtaking. Wonderfully captured.

I love it when a movie is made about a time in history that i have studied in school.

I was alwats facinated by the Mayan empire and its decline and now the story is being brought to the big screen hopefully faithfully adapted from historical records.

I was watching an interview with the director and he said while some aspects of the cultural rituals were not included in the film, the majority of them are incliding human sacrifice to the gods. I remember learning that the heads of the sacrifices were rolled down the temple and it will be depicted. What fun, seeing a history book come to life.

There is also alot of man candy. Those mexican actors are looking good. Actually they arent actors and most of them are doing it for the first time but you would think they were pros because im sold.

I wonder if this movie is really going to encompass all of mayan cutlure, or if it's just going to be a spectacle so that everyone watching will think that the definitive characteristic of mayan culture was ruthless human sacrifices.
 
Well no, but the movie is about the decline of the Mayans. Towards the end the chiefs kept increasing the number of sacrifices hoping that peace would be restored and wealth acqired. They might have went a bit overboard but that is what happenned so it will be depicted.
 
I have absolutely no interest in supporting anything that dumbass Mel Gibson is involved with.

Very good comments newboy. I intend to see this movie and figure that Mel Gibson will give a good interpretaton of the Mayan culture, from his point of view; which is what a good director does.
The Mayans were a culture that made many significant discoveries in the Western Hempisphere. Their is no denying though that they did perform human sacrifices, as did the Aztecs. That was the culture of the time throughout the advanced civiliations of Central and South America.
The same thing occured in ancient Egypt and Northern Europe at some times.

Mel Gibson is turning in to a fine director of films with historical accuracy. I hope he continues doing so.
 
I'm interested in seeing this movie, and if nothing else enjoying it as simply a story. Being an archaeology major with a concentration in mesoamerican studies I'm sure some of the portrayals will be laughable, but that's not why I'm going to see it. I simply want to enjoy the picture. Nowadays you have to expect that any historical film will take some liberties, but I think that is ok.

But alot of the actors are of Mayan decent and the movie is told in the Yucatan the original Mayan speak.

There wil laways be someone popping up to get 15 minutes.
 
I went to see it today. I thought it was a beautiful and fascinating movie though I'm not sure what Mel Gibson's point was.
 
I heard that it was needlessly gorey (more so than the Passion and Braveheart combined) and that while it's interesting, with all the gore, you begin to wonder what the point or purpose it's supposed to serve.

Now given, the woman reviewing the movie was an idiot, but she may have a point.

I guess it doesn't matter anyway since I don't support Gibson.
 
I took two semesters of Mesoamerican Art History, I want to see this movie and not for any type of accuracy but to get a glimpse of Mayan 12th century culture (I'm assuming unless it states it in the beginning credits what time period the movie takes place in, AD or BC).
 
I went to see it last night because I was always interested in Mesoamerican history as well. While I can't speak to its authenticity, it was visually quite arresting. I enjoyed it, though my friend was bored. I think the movie takes place just before the Spanish conquest (for a reason that will be very clear if you see the movie) although press accounts keep saying that it takes place right before the collapse of the Mayan civilization, which would have been around 900 A.D.

i wonder if this movie will do a lot of harm to our interpretation what the maya were like.

i think a lot of us are confusing the maya with the aztec and (in terms of human sacrifices at the VERY atleast) they more different than night and day.

then again, i should expect this, many still don't know there is a difference between chinese and japanese

i sure hope it'll be okay.

i plan to see it, but i'm going in knowning that it's a complete farce of what the maya were like.
 
well, i went on impulse and watched it just now.

like i said, as historically accurate as lord of the rings.

fortunately, it doesn't matter: an enormous majority of the story has almost nothing to do with the maya. it's a plain 'ole man-vs-man plot
 
Mr Gibson is entitled to his views (as completely fucked-up and asinine as they may be) and while I do not wish to associated with him or his views in any fashion whatsoever, I will not deprive myself of a good movie.

I've enjoyed his movies (from an acting/direction/story standpoint) thus far and see no reason for that to change.
