Apology aimed at healing 'Grey's Anatomy'

Story Highlights

• Actor Isaiah Washington apologizes for using anti-gay slur
• ABC rebukes Washington in public statement
• Lesbian-gay organization invites Washington to meet

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The heated controversy at ABC's top show, "Grey's Anatomy," boiled over Thursday as the network rebuked co-star Isaiah Washington for an anti-gay comment and Washington issued a lengthy apology.
"We are greatly dismayed that Mr. Washington chose to use such inappropriate language at the Golden Globes, language that he himself deemed `unfortunate' in his previous public apology," the network said in a statement.
"His actions are unacceptable and are being addressed," the statement concluded.
During a backstage interview Monday at the Globes gala, Washington denied involvement in a heated on-set incident in October during which an anti-gay remark was reportedly uttered.
"No, I did not call [co-star] T.R. [Knight] a faggot," Washington told reporters. "Never happened, never happened." (Full story)
In his apology Thursday, Washington acknowledged "repeating the word Monday night."
"I apologize to T.R., my colleagues, the fans of the show and especially the lesbian and gay community for using a word that is unacceptable in any context or circumstance. I marred what should have been a perfect night for everyone who works on 'Grey's Anatomy.' I can neither defend nor explain my behavior. I can also no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I've asked for help."
ABC said in its statement it has "a longstanding policy to maintain respectful workplaces" for its employees, adding that the network had "dealt with the original situation in October, and thought the issue resolved."
Thursday's events followed a critical statement Wednesday from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Neil Giuliano, GLAAD president, said he had contacted Washington's representatives in hopes of meeting the actor to discuss "the destructive impact of these kinds of anti-gay slurs."
"Washington's repeated use of it on-set and in the media is simply inexcusable," Giuliano said in the statement.
Washington said on Thursday that he welcomes the chance to meet with gay and lesbian community leaders "to apologize in person and to talk about what I can do to heal the wounds I've opened."
"I know a mere apology will not end this, and I intend to let my future actions prove my sincerity," Washington said.
Knight, who said soon after the October fracas that he is gay, appeared on Tuesday's taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to discuss the original incident and Washington's recent comments.
"He referred to me as a faggot," Knight said of the October incident. "Everyone heard it."
"Grey's Anatomy," now in its third season, won the Golden Globe for best television drama. It regularly finishes at or near the top of the Nielsen rankings.

He's only apologizing to save his ass....he's outrageous and I hope he loses his job on the show....

How can you work in Hollywood and have such a nasty and negative attitude to gay people?

Eh, he's made the statement aknowledging his error (in one respect) and I don't care so much that I'll never let him live it down. I don't really see a lot of television actors going really far anyway that I'd care enough about the example they're setting.

Mel Gibson and other conservatives get along fine apparently...

that's a good point luminum...but it just puzzles me...how is it that a person like Isaiah Washington who has been in films and television for years could have such a nasty taste for gay men? Surely he's worked with them (us) in the past....

And yet I am still obsessed with Grey's Anatomy....

I still look at him with a raised eyebrow....is that wrong??

What's funny is the episode when they were fishing in the river with two guys that were gay...and blah blah blah gay guy got cut on the head, and Isiah had nothing to do with it. What a shock.

He's only apologizing to save his ass....

Dead right.

It's a pathetic snivelling attempt to save his career.

Even if he can cling to Grey's Anatomy by his fingernails, no-one will touch him after this. And sure as night follows day, all tv shows must end.

(Apart from Days Of Our Lives...)

Who are the spin doctors who wrote his so-called apology for him? I want to be able to contact them if ever I should open my mouth and change feet.

translation... I want people to stop circulating petitions to fire me so I'll say I'm sorry and hope they shut up

Who are the spin doctors who wrote his so-called apology for him?
lol.. that's what i thought too.. just listen to him talk, it's obvious there's no way he wrote that himself.. i guess he got himself one of those "great, shiny publicists" after all..

signing a petition isn't going to help much. as mentioned in another thread. you have to go after the money makers.. ie the sponsors. the advertisers of the show is where the money comes from. ABC isn't going to do much because this show is one of their top rated shows. They are not going to do anything to jeopardise their hit shows. Focus on sending letters of discontent at the sponsers of the show. Let them know that you will boycott their products and or services and you will tell others to do the same. Tell them why you are going taking such action. ABC executives will listen to the sponsers because this is their bread and butter. I don't personally watch the show, but its the principal of the thing. The man is clearly dangerous. You voice will be more effective by dealing with the moneymakers.

I think its a great apology and I'm impressed that he made it. I especially like the part where he admits that he has issues. What more can one really ask for?

Maybe he, Mel Gibson and Michael Richards can start a singing group.
It's about time those two teenage Nazi girls had some competition.

I doubt his outburst the first time came from a place of gay hatred, although it was still unacceptable to hear that word - even though it happens everyday either used in hatred or as a joking phrase between friends or just as a form of insulting someone (who won't take it to heart). I believe him not to be hateful of gays, i mean if he disliked them to the degree of name calling there'd be far more incidents to report between him and T.R and also he may not comprimise his beliefs by working on the same show as someone who is 'gay'.

The second time round was just an unfortunate choice of words, but did show him out to be a liar. As be denied an incident which occured.

I'm all for the acceptance of gays, but to get this message from begining to hate on someone for there choice of words is not the way i'd go about it. Okay he did a bad thing, he made a mistake (well he made a few, lol) but to single someone out for something that happens worldwide on a daily basis, someone who is judged on a daily basis already is just wrong.

omg...this guy was in "true crime" where his character was on death row for murder.......towards the end hes strapped down and shot with poison........they saved his character....but i loved seeing this mof strapped down.....what you think?

I think its a great apology and I'm impressed that he made it. I especially like the part where he admits that he has issues. What more can one really ask for?

Well, it would seem some people are out to crucify him.

Basically. People aren't happy unless they have something to complain about.

"He called him a faggot! He should apologize."

Washington apologizes.

"What a lame apology. He's only apologizing to save his ass."

Pick a lane, and stay in it, people.
