Apple announces Windows browser

What he said.

MOOSE
Depends if speed is an issue. Safari isn't likely running fast on windows yet if it has a debugger or a bug reporter - - whatever. I can tell you it's about twice as fast as Firefox on my Mac and Firefox is about twice as fast as IE 5.2

Who needs Safari when you can just get Firefox?

That's easy - anyone who wants to test their websites against the most popular browser on the Mac. Apple even reproduced Mac OS X's antialiasing in the Windows version of Safari, so pages really look the same on both versions. Oh yeah, and I've heard there's some handheld gadget of some sort they're releasing soon that runs Safari...

Despite being a long-time Macuser, I don't like Safari a lot.

The chief beef is that it's too slow; Firefox--at least with Fasterfox installed--is far faster.

I can't stand the Mac version of Firefox. It doesn't play nice with any of the nifty stuff built into the Mac - like the systemwide spell checker, inline dictionary, text services, emacs key bindings, keychain etc etc etc. Worse, even the basics don't work right - like the context menus or the arrow keys in text fields. I can't use it for more than about twenty minutes at a time without being overcome by the urge to start randomly stabbing people with a fork.

Wascally: I have changed my mind.

I'm now using Safari all the time. I don't know what they did, but now it runs a lot faster than it did before.

I've noticed that Firefox has some caching problems; when the cache gets completely full, Firefox slows down to a baby crawl.

Cool - do you like the new pulsing orange 'look at me!' thingie that pops up when you search for text on a page? I actually suggested that in a feature request a couple of years ago, so I feel all proud of myself and everything. Sad I know, but there it is.

I've always liked Safari, quirks and all, but I can't help thinking they should have left the Windows version in the oven a bit longer. I mean, it's great that more people will be able to test their sites on Safari now, but it's not exactly going to help Apple's reputation if they keep foisting half baked Windows ports on people.

Don't forget, it is a Beta. It had some holes in it which were patched in 3 days. MS took 6 months to patch Vista/IE7 and that is the finished product.

When you have a multitude of computer brands running various flavours of Windows in various states of disarray and an infinite combination of application software, what looked fine in the lab might not be as good in real life. It needs testing by lots of people.

My msn messenger for the Mac craps out when I close saving the conversation and it is v6.0.2 Be patient my friend.;)

^ I wasn't thinking so much about exploits, which unfortunately I think are inevitable. I was thinking more of the crashing and missing features. But yeah, it is a beta and will hopefully only get better.
