Sam will be crossing the Rainbow Bridge next Monday morning.

Roomie is off his bender now and has been a big help with her these past few days and made the decision all by himself. Yesterday, I simply told him "It's time to let her go." Last night, he asked, "Do you really think it's time?"

I think he needed to hear it.

As soon as the pet hospital opened this morning, he phoned and made the appointment.

Now, to make her last days as comfortable as possible.

I think that, when he finally sobered up enough to see how bad off she was, he felt really guilty about not being here all weekend to help me with her. He hasn't said anything. He never does.

Good luck getting through this hard time. I know it may not seem much but you have my support down here in Austin. Hope you are able to make peace with your roommate while he goes through this too.

Sad news...but good (well, 'sensible') news.

I'll be thinking of you on Monday.

It's a terrible thing to have to have your loved pet put down as I well know. Several years ago I had to have my little fox terrier put to sleep 2 days after his 21st birthday. He had been totally blind and deaf for the last 2 years of his life. All of his teeth had fallen out by the time he was 15 so he could only eat soft food. He had what the vet thought was a stroke one day when he just started crying and was unable to stand up. I rushed him to the vet finally realizing that I had to do what I should have done probably 2 years earlier. I still blame myself for making that sweet little dog go through more misery than he should have had to. I was thinking of me more than I was thinking about him. But I learned a good lesson from that and I will never let one of my pets suffer needlessly again.

gsdx, you're doing the right thing and the pup is lucky he's got you there to make sure he doesn't suffer needlessly. Maybe this cloud will have a silver lining and your roommate will see that he himself needs to make some personal changes in his life.

Good luck on Monday!

I'm verklempt just thinking about what this must be like. My doggie's an old gal and I can't imaging the day I have to make the same decision.

I'm sorry for ya...

Neil, I am glad to hear the decision has been made. You (and the roommate) are doing the right thing for Sam.

Please give her a treat from me. I aways think of her when I see you name and avatar. She's a dear.(*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*)

It'll be tough, but you know you can always cry out on my/our shoulder(s), right?

I'll be thinking of you Monday. (*8*)

The Rainbow Bridge.....ahhhh you found it!!!
Just makes me cry thinking about it.
(*8*) (*8*) (*8*) SAM (and you too gsdx).....

I can only imagine what you are going through. I lost
a wonderful pet last year by natural causes and it is
still hard to think about.
You are doing the right thing, she was lucky to have
you all this time too. I would like to think that
Rainbow Bridge is real, for I know there would be a
crowd waiting for me also.
I will be thinking of you. Hugs to you and Sam.

Neil, I'm glad you're getting the help from your roomie at last. I know this isn't easy, but you know it's the best for Sam now. I will be thinking of you and wish you the best in these times of heartache. (*8*) (*8*)

I had to put my labrador down two years ago when it was discovered he had malignant melanoma which had spread to his lungs. It hurt to do it, but I don't have any regrets. I took several pictures of him before I took him in to the vet, and now when I look at them, I realize just how sick he had become...

I still miss him...

(group) For everyone that's a pet lover.

(*8*) (*8*) (*8*) For GSDX, who's a great and caring guy.
