Are there good printers any more?

I keep hearing that HP printers aren't as reliable as they used to be. I've had really bad experiences with several other companies -- my favorite being a Canon that insisted, every time it powered up, that there was a paper jam, and about every third page announced that it was out of paper, even though there were fifty sheets in the tray (best solution there was to restart it and laugh at the "jammed paper" message).

What are your recommendations?

I have a Canon MX870. I am very pleased with it. No problems at all.

HP's printers do suck plus they have viruses and other junk in them. I've had my HP printer for almost a year and the scanner is already giving me problems. They don't make them like they use to.

I got a Lexmark with my first computer. Piece of junk.
I've had two HP's. Neither lasted more than a year. My
current printer is a Canon and it hasn't burped even once in a year and a half. I print 6 pages a day so I don't think I'm a heavy user. HP's should have lasted longer than they did.

I got an old, used LaserJet off eBay, and I'll never ever give it away :king:

We recently got a Xerox colorqube 8570 at work. The printer wasn't cheap, nor is the ink, but it has done an amazing job thus far.

It uses 'solid ink', which is basically like a brick of wax, to handle printing.

And no special paper is required to get stunning results.

However, I didn't pay for it and probably wouldn't spend that much on a printer for my personal use.

Can the fax function be disabled? One of the big problems with the last two printers here is that they kept demanding to be plugged into a phone line -- in fact until a patch came out for the HP my mom has, it wouldn't do anything at all but say the phone line had to be connected lots of times, and the only way to deal with it was to turn it off for a minute while shutting down the computer.

If not, is there one just like it except for not having a fax function?

Thinking of color reminds me: my mom's current HP burns through color ink even when the printing is only in black and white! I had to dig down in the settings and find where to set it to "greyscale only" -- now, if she wants to print in color, I have to talk her through changing the settings.

HPs...

I think my second printer was an HP. It outlasted three different computers, and survived being knocked off the desk and having beer spilled in it.

Then I had an Epson, which was superb until I wanted to start printing more than text and line drawings.

I'm happy with my printers at the moment, and neither have given me any problem:

Konica-Minolta MagiColor 5650EN laser printer.
mainly used for office printing, invoicing etc.

Epson Styus Office BX300F
Used for business, and personal. Never used the built in fax, but does not need to be connected to a phone line... ink not really an issue as it's quite good.

I use both printers heavily on a daily basis... and they run every day for up to 9 hours! eeeeeek!! lol.

Ohh - I'm using a Lexmark E210n mono laser in my office at work (can't print to the networked printers), and it's doing a fine job. It's on its third or fourth toner cartridge, I think, and has worked well - I have no problems with it.

I have an old HP Photosmart Printer (7500 series I think) that still works for me like a charm. It is getting up there in age (10+ years), but it still works, even with my Windows 7 and Linux setups.

For comparison: it takes my sister's printer (which she got last summer) longer to print out a 3 page document than it does my printer, when all the settings are the same...

I'm with Corny. IIRC, he's got the same tank as I do: HPLJ5. I have had it for almost 15 years. Hell, my old HPLJ 4 died not too long ago and that was even older.

I'd get an old HP jaserjet - the big honkin' workgroup printers. They're slow as molasses in a Canadian winter, but they work every time.

You can even snag a cheap jet direct card and network it.

I also like lexmark workgroup printers. The optra t632 is my fav. It's quite fast compared to the old HP's.

Both have inexpensive long-life toner cartridges.

I have a cheap Cannon that's working fine.

My last printer was an Epson, never again.

i have a lexmark "laser" for b&w.
canon inkjet for colour.

I don't think I'd ever get a canon again. Configuration issues. Pushing crappy canon interface on you at every turn just to get the canon brand in your face...no thanks.

Any printer is fine, however I'd prefer laser printers as they are faster and sogs the paper less. I prefer compatible ink over genuine ink because it does the same thing, but cheaper.
