Hey Guys, back in December I started to get a pop-up stating that as of the 15th January AVG free was going to be discontinued, but I could pay for their service by upgrading.
The pop-ups now say 18th February is the date.
Is there an alternate to AVG free at the same price?
I am about to purchase a mac book so I dont want to pay for antivirus protection till I get it.
Your kind thoughts and words are much anticipated
Thanx

I have AVG and my mom and sister have it. None of us are getting pop ups like that. You might have some kind of spyware thing that is trying to get you to pay for some other product. I've not seen anything yet to suggest AVG will not continue to be free.

if you don't also have Spybot search and destroy you might try downloading it and running it to see if it finds some spyware on your PC.

here is a link to how to install and use it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html

you can get spybot here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/downlo...y/1043809773/1

i think your ok with your AVG.

hope that helps.

I own a mac book pro and I don't have any type of anti virus protection or even a pop up blocker at that. Mac OSx takes care of all that shit without you even having to lift a finger. The pop up blocker that is pre-installed in the safari browser works like a charm. I have had various macs for the past 4 or so years and have never ever had one virus infection on any of them. Come to think about it I haven't ever had to deal with a pop up either. If you want the peace of mind having virus protection stop at apple's website. There are plenty of apple endorsed free programs you can download.

Two guys here should learn to read:

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 18th of Feb 2007.

i am on norton's now though.
Everywhere on the internet people report having huge problems with Norton, that it slows down their system, reports files wrongly as virus, yet you still install it?

BTW, I never had any popup with the news either.

Yeah I got it, but then went and downloaded the new one. It already found one virus I didn't know I had.

yea i get the poips up and thanks i will install the new free AVG!

Ya, My AVG said it would no longer be free. Updated my version, and now I am fine, and free. :-) ..|

Anybody else installed their Spyware program too? It found a lot of spyware and even trojans that Ad-Aware, Spybot and the Microsoft one don't find.
