.avi as video container created by Microsoft about 10 years ago, it's one of the most popular containers today and unfortunately, Macs have an issue with pretty much everything Microsoft made.

Usually, QuickTime should be able to play .AVIs depending on the codec that was used to make the avi, sometimes, QuickTime doesn't recognize the codec of the video file or it doesn't have it on it's server for download.

So sometimes Macs are not able to play specific AVIs. Maybe if you download and install WMP for Mac it'll work.

Download MPlayer OS X 2. It is free and it will play all .avi files. That has, at least, been my experience.

Yes, I second VLC. It's a great app. Occassionally I've some dodgy .avi file and it repairs it before playing.

QT is poor with many formats, even flip4mac (the Free QT Plugin available at Microsoft) cannot play all the different microsoft media formats. So it's good to have a varied selection of media players, so you're never left in the dark.

Once you have VLC or whatever, to play the file, instead of QT (default), CRTL+Click the file in question and then select Open with: then make your choice. Or you could always drag and drop onto the VLC Player.

Hey guys thanx for the help, vlc doesnt work on this file and mplayer plays some parts but not all.
How many media players does a guy need?????

VLC VLC VLC. I've yet to come across a file it can't play.

The only files I've found that VLC won't play are avi's encoded with the intel indeo video codec. There is no os x version of this codec, so it cannot open them. They did work on os 9 though, which is kinda funny.
