Lemme guess, your American right? XD

What is America's obsession with flip phones and Motorolla's? Most people over here wouldnt touch flip phones, E.G. T-mobiles first batch of the Sony Ericsson k850i sold out in two days, O2's first batch sold out in an evening. Flip phones never get much positive response outside the states.

I don't think it's a matter of an obscession but more about cell phone marketing. I've had both flip phones and non-flip but everytime I go into the stores to buy a phone, that's the first thing they pull out...an array of flip phones! I'm comfortable with either one. If the technical features of the phone match what I want and I'm attracted to a particular design, that's what I buy, flip or not. For me, it's not an issue.

I've had flip phones break at the hinges, which is annoying. On the other hand, they are easier to cradle to your ear when your hands are full.

This is exactly why it is an obsession. People buy phones that they are attracted to. In the states, Motorolla flip phones were the best sellers, despite lacking features that were embedded on Nokias and Sony Ericssons at the same time. SE and Nokia never managed to suceed in the American market desite having the better specified phones - The average phone buyer over there just thinks 'Me want phone that flips' or now 'Me want I-phone' and buys one of these. While SE and Nokia have sold flip phones in the past, they are never at the top of their range, reason being is that there is a very small market for them elsewhere outside of the states.

The K850i and this upcoming K660i are extremely well specified as is the Nokia N95. The K660i has the added bonus of a killer design, great features, and a mid range price that will see it find its way comfortably into the hands of many many people, outside America of course :p

Sony Ericsson are also a first to be bringing HSDPA into the mainstream market with the K630i and K660i, which was up untill now only found on the top model handsets. Obviously with the majority of Americans still trailing behind on obsolete Edge, not many would care or even know what HSDPA is or does - 'Yay! I browse the web on my phone using Edge at 180 Kbps! I feel so modern'.

That was very close minded of you and makes all Americans sound like Neanderthals, some may be, but every society has their problems. I got the Motorola because it was cheap, and it fit into my budget, free. I didnt really have much of another choice. I didnt mind that it doesnt have the features of other phones, I dont need a music player, I have an iPod, I dont need the internet I have a computer for that, and I dont need a camera on my phone, i have a camera for that. All of this combining into one crap is overrated, and unnecessary to me. I'm a simple man, all I want is a simple phone that I can talk on, and send text messages on. Not only that, but 'm a pretty big guy I'm 6'1 and have big hands, so it's hard for me to cradle a phone that fits in most peoples' palms. I need a bigger phone.

I've already read it, and what I said still stands, I dont need any of those gizmos on the phone, so, why get one that has all that stuff on it?

Not adding anything new to the debate but I too was very intrigued seeing all those flip phones in US series and always wondered why they're so popular over there... they seem more of a hassle to me when you have to open it and use both hands to start using them...
Of course the fact sms are less frequent there might explain a little...

And yes I agree, what the fuck with iphones???? Other phones can do the same and have been able to for moooonths/yeeeeaaars  And apple is such a polluter !!

Finally, and so as not to be completely off-topic, that SE has a great design ! I love the colour :D

Thanks for the posting on the new SE K660i. I am a SE fan and very pleased at the effort that SE have made to create such a practical and very attractive mobile phone.

you forget that flip phones are pretty popular in asia as well. i don't know why anybody thinks they are backward? i don't like them either, and i hate even the normal phones from motorolla (NOT user friendly, once you had a SE you won't go back) but there are some modern flip-phones with all the features and tech.

^ Personally I don't find them to be especially backward... it's just that they make me think of gadgets and I wonder why they seem so attractive to a given population when I don't clearly see in what aspect they would be better than other sorts of phones, they actually seem less practical to me (and I say "seem" because I never had one in my hands)...

to answer the OP, yes that's a nice looking phone with tons of features.

I have a flip phone. it's my second cell phone. my first was a nonflip one. i like my flip phone better. i don't have a MP3 player, i use my digital camera about once every 2 months, and i don't carry a laptop. i don't need to surf the web when i'm standing in line at the grocery store. most of the folks i know have blackberries (so they have a lot of those features) and one person has a new i-phone. he thinks it's cool and i liked the touch screen thingy. none of those are flip phones and we are all in the US.

just because flip phones maybe be a niche market in the US doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it and that doesn't make it abnormal. personally i like my flip phone because it makes me feel like i'm on star trek with the communicators! :gogirl:

I actually have a slide phone, thanks, I enjoy it, it has an mp3 player on it, a camera, the internet, it's a samsung. It is too complicated, and has too many features to use during daily life. I dont use the internet enough to need the stuff on these new phones. I dont like to connect my life all the time with people, I want to be able to separate. This world is becoming wayyyy too connected and it's time to realize that life is not about being lassoed by a phone or email or t.v. all the time.

No one here has really mentioned Slider phones minus the one post on the Japanese one.

My Samsung U510 (Helio Heat in the US) is small and packed with all the features i need.

An MP3 player with Bluetooth Playback and external memory slot
A decent camera (1.3MP) nice quality for a phone.
Great to talk on. (the phone has a good mic in it.
AND.
It's keys are easy to txt on.

and its smaller than the SE W810i (candybar) with basically the same features.

I can also watch TV as it's included with my plan, but I havn't really tried it.

As for durability, put a clear case on it. When it scratches up or cracks get a new one. It'll keep your phone looking new when you want to show it off. I recommend this for ANY phone; flip or whatever.

Firstly, the 'TV' on that handset, and indeed on T-mobiles Mobile-TV in the UK is pre recorded clips from the most popular TV channels and music videos, also on an extremely poor quality screens.

The TV phones in Japan such as the Bravia range from Sony Ericsson are live TV, you can watch your TV channels in the same way you can on a normal TV, and the screens on these models are comparable to HDTV.

I understand that, but it's a start. I'm in Canada, keep that in mind. We get phones when there extinct in Europe, Asia, and even the United States sometimes.

Secondly, a 1.3MP was 'decent' 5 years ago. It is extremely and beyond outdated now. Most mid-range phones nowadays like the K660i in the OP are at least two megapixels. The Nokia N95, Sony Ericsson K850i, and Samsung G600 and G800 and LG Viewty are all 5 megapixels. Sony Ericsson have a mass market successor to the flagship K850i in production right now with 7 megapixels and a 2.4" screen, which is a smaller screen then some phones, but lets not forget how small the K series handsets are compared to the bulkier large screen models.

a 1.3MP camera on a phone in Canada 5 years ago, pfft. 5 years ago I just got a LG 6070 flip with a colour screen. The highest MP camera phone on CDMA here in Canada is 2MP and on GSM is 3MP. But the norm here is 1.3MP.

And great to talk on isnt really a valid comparative between mobile phones, just about all of them are great to talk on.

Nope. I've had some really terrible phones to talk on. The cheap samsung I bought last year when my phone broke while i was waiting for the last 2 months of my contract to finish was a horrible phone to talk on. And if you want a crappy phone look at that one not my u510.

I saw the phone earlier on Gizmodo, I love it. I'm using a SE W810i right now. That green is such a great color. I believe it's got all the same features my current phone has. I don't text on my phone or use the net either but that's because I'm in front of a computer all day long and have access to email and the web. I do use it for music when I get bored of internet radio and for taking pictures when I don't have a camera handy and it takes great pictures for a phone camera.

I think using your phone for everything is mostly for folks that are on the go or that don't have immediate access to a computer for email and internet. Then again, I'm so used to having a computer in front of me that I would probably freak if I didn't have my email.. haha! Then I would probably be into texting etc... I tried texting once.. there was no point to it when it made more sense for me to call and waste 3minutes. It's not like the old days when you would never answer your phone for fear of wasting minutes.

The Golden Rule should apply here, as it should apply everywhere else.

Treat people the way that you want to be treated.

If you've got an attitude, then don't be surprised if the Mods get an attitude with you! (*8*)

I don't have a problem with the Sony Ericcson K660i.

It looks purdy.

Now why in the hell I'd want one is beyond me.

I have a hard enough time using my cell phone for phone calls, without having to add other gadgets and features, but that's just me! ;)

I wish i had gotten in here earlier. I wanted to say not to engage Cum_Slave in a debate about phones. He cant rap her head around the fact a person doesnt want a phone with a thousand features on it. He never actually can call the phone the best thing on the market. All he does is repeat over and over how many features it has and thinks that is a valid arguement.

I am not attacking you Cum_Slave. I find you amusing. I am merely stating what I notice. I don't get your curve with cell phones and stuff, but get over it.

Oh, and the Japanese will always be ahead of us in all things tech. Its Japan.

It sure does a lot.
If it was a flip phone I might consider it.

I have to weigh in with tyler. I have the stupid American preference for flip phones.

The K660i is a great phone, but I'd destroy it in two days. I'd scratch the screen up by stuffing it in my pocket with my change and keys. All the phone's keys would get mashed and it would be constantly beeping and trying to play my mp3s or call "911" or something! And that would keep running the battery down! And I'd probably crack the screen by bumping it against the end of a weight bar while it was in my pocket. Sure, I could avoid taking it to the gym or taking it to work, etc.. But what's the point of having a mobile phone if you can never have it with you?

It's a great phone, but it's not for Neanderthals! Candy bar phones are for the inside pocket of a business man's suit coat or a woman's purse. And I doubt that a working stiff like me could afford a really nice phone like that!

It's a really great phone. I'm sure it's perfect for a lot of people who have the right lifestyle.

I think you guys really under-estimate the resistance of phones' screens... my candy-bar sony is 2 years old and has NO scratch... yeah I do stuff it in my pocket with keys and coins... as for the keys, they auto-lock when phone's not in use ;)

I think you guys really under-estimate the resistance of phones' screens...

I think you underestimate my ability to destroy things!

... as for the keys, they auto-lock when phone's not in use ;)

Yeah, my "flip phone" auto-locks the keys, too. But I still somehow manage rarely to do get things turned on and have the phone trying do call people or do stuff in my pocket! I once managed to change the ringtone just by having the phone in my pocket! :)

I once had a biology teacher who taught a lab where he took great pains to try to set the experiments up so we could not possibly screw things up. He'd been teaching for years, and every year the classes found new and creative ways to screw up the experiments. He used to say of me that he could make things "justgofaster"-resistant, but not "justgofaster"-proof. I"m a champion destroyer!

Maybe I underestimate their construction, but the "candy bar" phones don't look very "justgofaster"-resistant to me!
