I use NOD32 too (and pay for it).

AVG Free is good but it is only a virus scanner; its on-access scanning does not detect adware and spyware etc. They offer a separate spyware scanner but that is an on-demand scanner (not on-access). The commercial versions offer on-access detection of spyware and adware.

The advantage of NOD32 though is its small memory footprint and minimal impact on performance. It includes detection for viruses, spyware and adware etc. It has also scored a 100% success rate and gained a VB100 award in every test by VirusBulletin for several years.

Trend is meant to be good, I use to us Kaspersky and loved it, I use AVG Free now its alright picks up stuff occasionally, Nortans and Mcaffe I wouldnt touch with a 10 foot poll resource hungry and poorly programed to look good thats all it is IMO

I use AVAST. It is free and works quite well.

AVAST and on my notebook AVG - good stuff and stable platform. Norton is just too frumpy

The best two virus engines are Nod32 and Kapersky. AVG is pretty good, and of the free AV programs I have used, it was the best all around. I was happy with AVG, but Nod32 is something else and I love it. Well worth the money. Updates multiple times per day and I love that too. Its been years since I had a virus. I have only had a virus on my system a couple of times, and none of them were ever bad.

The best AV protection is still common sense.

As others have said, stay away from Nortons and McAfee as they are horrid.

Avg Free 7.5 its just as free as the bugs its fight Or you can pay money for Norton to Bog down your machine. Its sad when a core 2 duo needs almost 5 minutes before its useable, waiting for norton to lock down the computer.

I"ve known for ages that Nod came out tops in the tests (although overlooked by most computer mags), but I'd had Norton for a few years and I felt comfortable with it (despite it's well-known drawbacks).

Well, Norton finally screwed up so bad it had to go. It let through a very nasty trojan that started deleteing my work files. And the trojan wasn't even some new superbug - it's been around for two years. A little freebie antispy app found it and zapped it for me. . . .And the lost files were backed up on an external drive!

McAfee has been the biggest pain in the ass ever on our corporate network. We had it on every workstation, until it started acting up, and we ditched it (McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.0i) in favor of some corporate version of symantec. On one workstation, McAfee would hang when uninstalling via control panel. We manually deleted any and all files and registry keys associated with it, and low and behold, the user now can't print, and IE is somehow messed up, pages display incorrectly, and we can't figure out how to fix it without reformatting the computer. Doing some more McAfee uninstalls today, I found another workstation whose uninstall hangs, so I just left it be, because we don't want to risk messing up that computer too until we find a solution.

My vote goes for Symantec though, so far don't have any complaints about it.

I use Norton Internet Security 2007 on my Vista PC.
Haven´t any slowness in the system because of norton.
Maybe that´s because this computer is muscle pc with 4 gig of ram etc.
When you use Explorer you it also warns youl about phising sites etc.
Very nice.
For all you Vista users out there Norton is my recommendation.
If you don´t wanna pay I think Avast is as good it can get for being free.
