I've heard people give comments about movies, music, TV, etc. And from what I can tell, people have varying tastes on the media of today.

One thing I've always wondered is what do you guys consider the best of each genre of media. Whats the best song, who's the best artist/director/actor, what's the best film, so on, so forth.

I doubt people will post on this, but it's worth a shot anyway

Music's hard to do, what with different styles having different standards of what is and isn't good. So here's a top-ten of bands/artists that I love and think are really good.
1- Janis Joplin
2- Led Zeppelin
3- Hole
4- The Smashing Pumpkins
5- Joni Mitchell
6- The Dresden Dolls
7- The Beatles
8- Susan Tedeschi
9- The Cranberries
10- Blondie (pre-breakup)

Movies!
1- Grand Hotel
2- Breakfast at Tiffany's
3- Wag the Dog
4- All That Jazz
5- Juno
6- Chicago
7- Elizabeth (fuck that sequel bullshit)
8- Pulp Fiction
9- Kill Bill
10- Waitress

I think it's hard because those categories all have their own distinct genres.

Is Edward Norton the best comedic actor? Probably not, but I do think he's one of the best dramatic actors. Likewise, is Robin Williams the best dramatic actor? Not the best, certainly, but he's a great comedian. And both are able to do well enough in other genres.

So I guess I'd just end up breaking each thing into every genre I care about and listing the tops. But that would be a loooong list.

Honestly, I am looking for personal opinion. If I receive enough feedback, I might just collect the most commonly mentioned things and make some polls.

The real point of this is to get people researching music, movies, etc. outside of their personal tastes, and try to make some expansion and diversity on that part.

Well, in terms of favorites, my favorite Indie Rock band is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I think they're stylistically and vocally unique and their albums have different feels that I love. They also give off a great punky fun and chill attitude.

I won't give you bests. I'll give you favorites.

Mmm. Albums. Forgot those.

Favs: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (Smashing Pumpkins), Pearl (Janis Joplin), Live Through This (Hole), The Beatles, Blood on the Tracks (Bob Dylan), Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (Dead Kennedys), Home (Dixie Chicks), The Dresden Dolls, Extraordinary Machine (Fiona Apple), Ladies of the Canyon (Joni Mitchell), The Joshua Tree (U2), Julie Ruin, Pussy Whipped (Bikini Kill)...I am going majorly overboard.

And my favorite single is a tie between all five Mellon Collie singles. Particularly the Aeropline Flies High releases with two additional songs per CD.
