Best Umbrella Cover Ever!

This guy is just barely ok and if you didn't think he was cute you wouldn't give it a second listen.
Tell me, why do you think Umbrella is one of the most covered songs in music history (and it just came out late April)?
Look Umbrella is Rihannas song, it was made for her type of voice. Mary J Blige, Britney Spears et al were offered Umbrella but no one could have done this song true justice, but Rihanna.
Rihanna and Umbrella were the perfect match. She just melts over the production.
I mean seriously Rihanna made the song the record breaking phenomenon that it became worldwide. You really think this youtube guy could have made Umbrella the success that it is all over the globe? Get real.
Rihanna's version produced by Nash and Stewart is great. Just drum and vocal, with that heavy analog synth bass line during the chorus, very clean, very powerful, and Rihanna's vocal on that track and especially the bridge is flawless. The lyrics are great, the production is great and the performance awesome.
Umbrella will give Rihanna her first Grammy. At first i wasn't sure but now i know that not only does it have to be nominated but it has to win. Its not because its the biggest song in the world this year, because popularity doesn't equal Grammy, but the lyrics are great and the entire production, you just have to reward it. And Rihanna works so hard , its time to recognize her. Not to mention the voters already feel bad for not nominating S.O.S last year. Talk about a snub.
It also has to be nominated and more likely win because the Grammys is also a TV show. The producers want high ratings, how can the biggest song of the year in the world not get recognized. People on a whole would be pissed off because its loved by so many.

S.O.S shot to number one all over too albeit not as much as Umbrella. Clubs couldn't get enough of it. It was one of if not the best dance single of last year. Even if "Hung Up" won it wouldn't have been so bad.

Um, I think he's better than "just barely okay". His intonation is pretty good, voice is strong and solid. Pretty standard sounding voice, though. Not bad.

Which is why it's so funny when I ask people about Umbrella and Rihanna and they say "Who?" If the song isn't considered overplayed and annoying, the people don't know about it. It's a pretty interesting extreme to encounter.

i really hate the trend that's been going on for the past couple years of people with acoustic guitars covering hip-hop, R&B, and pop songs.
i mean, the first time you heard someone play Hey Ya on an acoustic guitar it was kind of cleverly ironic, but some dude doing Umbrella is unoriginal and kind of lame.
and it's not even that the quality is poor, because it's a pretty decent cover, it just seems like a rip off.

You know, in a vacuum, I would say no. I think that when done infrequently, it's cool to hear a cover because from a singer's perspective, it may be one of their favorites and a song that they can contribute a different interpretation to. If done properly, earnestly, and creatively, you can really see a song in a different light and it's a great experience for an audience to have that depth of understanding of a song.
Some good examples are tribute albums, where a bunch of different singers or bands each do a famous track from the original artist and it all goes on one album.
Another good example, is We Will Become Silhouettes covered by The Shins and originally performed and written by the Postal Service. While not a cover of an old song, it's a completely different spin on the originally underground song. While Postal Service's version is soft and tinged with a sense of cynical resignation, the Shins' take is campy and ironically macabre. It's really cool to hear and understand both expressions.
However, we're not in a vacuum and it seems like the situation you described is what's happening with covers. They're just being pumped out lacking an original spin and just being done because people like the song and want to have people hear them sing it.
Example: That new "cover" of Britney's "Gimme More". What exactly are you extracting out of the pop song? Not much. It's still about an audience wanting "more" and making it a ballad doesn't change any understanding of it.
It really makes me sad because when a cover comes out of a really old song that's refreshing and a twist, it's really cool. But it seems like they're being drowned by these deluges of covers and samples. Lame.
