Bros could have been an average hit if it had A-list actors. If instead of Billy and Luke it was Chirs Evans and Ryan Reynolds,then the movie could have been an average hit. Bros was never gonna be a big hit. Many of the stereotypes in this movie should have been removed. The story should have been better also. Homophobia is not the reason Bros flopped. Most lgbt people didnt went to see the movie either. It flopped because the actors are unknown. Nobody can relate to them. Not even lgbt people. Nobody cares about unknown actors. Its just the way it is.

Theres still no openly relevant A-list gay actors. HOLLYWOOD needs to search for the next big gay star. Otherwise, gay men will be limited to independent movies. Mostly dramas. Depressing dramas at that. So, niche movies are the only option available for gay men. Unless big movies studios starts looking for masculine good looking gay actors who would have a potential to make it big. 95% of gay movies are dramas, 3% are dramedies,1% comedies and 1% genre movies. Thats the problem. Big studios needs to make gay action movies with gay actors in the leads, they also needs to make gay horror movies, gay science fiction movies, gay thrillers,ect... Otherwise it will turn round and round and nothing will go foward and change. Big movies studios are just starting to go gay. It will take time before we see big studio gay movies released every months.

It is exactly opposite of what I think. I rarely know who any actor is and I am proud of that. The only actor I think I recognize is Keanu Reeves and that is because I love who he is as a man.

Popular actors bore the shit out of me as do popular singers and actresses - too much publicity and I am turned off to them. I would much rather watch a bunch of unknown actors anyday.

The only problem for me is I play a trivia game every day and I get all the holywood/movie/actor questions wrong unless I make a lucky guess.

All these gay films and especially independent queer cinema seem to feature only very good looking guys with great bodies. How must that feel for the plain or downright unappealing gays?

Where are the gay Steve Buscemi's and Adrian Brody's?

To be fair, those guys don't get the heterosexual romantic comedies either...

But I do concur that gay indie film seems to favor conventional attractiveness for damn near every major role.

That might be because (I suspec)t most of the actors in queer films are actually queer. Not many Hollywood superstars are.

Women seem to like Adrian Brody but what do they know.

And why are the bulk of gay themed films always about romance? There are other aspects of gay culture that would be just as interesting to explore.

Thank you. My theory is that the "allies" who make these movies aren't comfortable delving deeper into gay culture, exploring its seedier, not so sunshine and rainbows side. They're comfortable with making a cutesy romance flick, but that's about it. (And even if someone makes a gay movie that isn't that, chances are that there'll be a backlash against it; just look at Cruising, and the Dahmer show).

And what's hilarious is that, try as they might, and despite preaching about how ignorant gay stereotypes are, they ultimately STILL end up presenting its lead character(s) as walking stereotypes. As I've pointed before, they're pretty much clones of each other, some sensitive, angsty, campy pretty boy who yaps about his feelings, and how lonely he is (or, if he's in relationship, how much he "wuvs" his boyfriend). Because, you know, gay = sensitivive, campy pretty boy = feminine.

And what's ESPECIALLY hilarious is that they promote their characters saying that they're not stereotypes. Yes, I can see that.

Of course, the same can't be said about Bros(dumb title, btw) since it's a mess made by gay filmmakers. On the bright side, it proves that gay flick made by gay people doesn't automatically equal good.

There are a few gay hollywood filmmakers, out or not, who rarely if ever touch on gay themes. Joel Shumaker comes to mind but I think he's dead.

Mine is easy - Tales of the City - nothing else comes close though there are others I like as well.

Facts. I wish indie films were more accessible. There's some great stuff out there. “Stranger By The Lake” and “Kaboom” are two faves that come to mind. One a thriller, one sci-fi. We're getting there slowly, but we need way more.

"Kaboom" was great. I love Gregg Araki. If you haven't seen "Nowhere", seek it out. It's like "Kaboom" but better. He also made "The Doom Generation" which is all but lost and forgotten but one of my favorite films ever.

As for my favorite gay themed movie, besides "The Doom Generation" (which is actually about the thin line between gay and not-gay-yet) has to be "My Own Private Idaho".

We watched this last night. Billy would not shut up about anything, a stereotype we really don't need to see again. Luke is our hometown boy, he looked great and was prob the reason we watched the whole thing. (He also does Hallmark movies very well) . Being very generous I'd give it 6/10.

I watched Bros last night after seeing the talk here - it should have been called Dross. So dull, Deborah Messing's cameo was the highlight, besides that the film has nothing.

Does anyone remember "Another Country"? I think it was quite successful - although since not being entirely cheesy and clichéd, it can't be compared to Hollywood's output.

Really? Maybe I misinterpreted it (not sure how as it was pretty straightforward) but I found it to be one of the most homophobic movies I've ever seen.
