So chance1826, for your father's high blood pressure which is the general run-of-the-mill hypertension the positional blood pressure isn't really that important. It is in other scenarios. But what he needs to do is just check it daily (many pharmacies have blood pressure machines which aren't too bad in terms of accuracy) for a while. Write them down and take them into his physician at the next appointment. From that, his physician can decide if he needs medication. As stated, a single blood pressure reading in this type of case doesn't mean a whole lot.

BenF46 is completely right. A 160/164 blood pressure would mean that your dad would be dead. I would bet money he heard wrong and its something like 160/100 or 160/90 or so. If its without a known cause, then the treatment is blood pressure medication of some sort (not much of a question with a blood pressure that high) and lifestyle changes with diet and excersize. However, you can't diagnose hypertension with a single blood pressure reading anyways.

A low sodium diet is very controversial in regards to blood pressure management if there is normal kidney function. I lean to the side that it doesn't matter at all. However, those that monitor their sodium intake are generally monitoring their other dietary intakes closely and thats a good thing.
