I have a first generation blu-ray player and I have to continually update the software just about every few months. It gets irritating when I have friends over and I have forgotten to update when we go to watch certain movies.

Are there newer blu-ray players that do not have to be consistently updated?

PS3 hardly updates. So you might as well buy that.

Huh. My PS3 seems to update almost every day that I turn it on. I'm sure in some of those updates that the Blu-ray firmware is upgrading.

Really? Do you turn your PS3 on a lot? Well mine does not update at all. Maybe you probably have Plus to where it updates every little new thing. As with people who don't have Plus will get the update in one big firmware upgrade a month or two months down the road. Seriously the last big Blu-Ray update I got was for the 3D Blu-Ray and that was last month.

I have a Sony S360 (2009) $129 USD and it plays all older and current blu rays I've bought so far. I've never updated it. I think there's only one update available anyway.

I also have a Sony S370 on sale @ Best Buy for $139 (was $179) USD, just bought it and it works very well. I just got Alien Anthology on blu ray and all the "Mu Th Ur" control screen features work fine. It also connects to Internet and works with Netflix/Amazon streaming with an ethernet cable. The Anthology allows you to bookmark and link all 4 films (discs) to the extra 2 discs of bonus materials. If it can handle that smoothly it can handle anything.

Both models have BD Live capability.

My PS3 had the most features for playing discs (like repeat A-B and slo mo) but it bricked up with the 3.5 update. It was a 2007 model. The fan in it was ridiculously noisy for watching movies.

If it was a launch PS3 then it dying is normal since the launch PS3's are crap anyways the best ones which will last a bit longer are the 2nd generation PS3's with the 80GB hard drive and two USB ports. I use my PS3 for gaming and Blu-Rays and like you said the Sony Blu-Ray players including the PS3 rarely update because they are good to go for a long time.

^ I believe it is a second gen

It has 2 USB ports and 40GB HDD

It cost $399 and I think I bought it in November of 2007

For the blu-ray players that stream content through their wireless (or wired) connections and say they work with netflex, youtube, etc, do they work with any online provider or is it only the 2-3 they list on the box. some list youtube and some don't but I can't find on the box a full list of all the online provides they utilize. anyone know?
thanks

I agree with gamerbear on the PS3. I've tried two blu-ray movies so far. Cars and Scott Pilgrim. Both asked me if I wanted to update for some internet thing and I clicked no and it was fine. The videos played fine. We have another one that's a phillips and it's kinda crap. Always asking to be updated, taking forever to lead, and having a horrible menu and UI.

However I will say that the phillips blu-ray player that we got was pretty cheap. It was like 150. It wasn't a first generation though. It could be just that the sony brand blu-ray players update less for some reason. Not sure if it's because Sony is responsible for blu-ray or what the reason.

I watch Blu-rays on my PS3, and I bloody love it!! ..|

I've noticed lately I seem to have more updates or a frequent basis, but they don't talk long to update/install.. :-)

It really depends on the player. I just bought a non-WiFi panasonic, and it hasn't asked for an update for the new movies I bought for it.

The age of the player also matters. Older players will receive fewer firmware updates because they can't play the newest specs. Players that are able to access the internet (and do access the internet on a regular basis) will update much more frequently.
