Bravo - Work of Art: The Next Great Artist

I saw a preview of it, but I almost never watch TV anymore, so nope. It does seem interesting though.

I wonder, how long do they have to complete a painting? It could take days, weeks, months, heck years for some artists.

my first reaction upon hearing the premise was "ugh". to me, art is probably the closest thing to faith or religion i have, so i was initially put off by the reality-tv-sation of it. i was particularly worried that the show would give us a rather dated view of what art can be. many people still think "drawings, paintings, sculptures" when they think of art, and find media like installations, performances, or videos "too weird", although they have now been part of the art world for roughly half a century. another factor is that art often needs enormous amounts of time and patience to be both created and consumed. a reality-tv version of it is bound to be a superficial version of a discipline that prides itself in being deep and meaningful.

but you know what? the show so far isnt bad at all. its perfectly enjoyable in a project runway kind of way. the show concentrates on the populist/decorative/commercial side of art, which is perfectly legitimate. after all, art isnt just about artistic self-expression, its also about entertaining, decorating, and selling. and maybe the title of the show should be "americas next top art-student", because it seems to me that the situation the contestants find themselves in is much closer to being in art school, where you have assignements, dead-lines, and grades.

miles is cute, and i kinda find erik hot, although maybe im just seduced by his tatoos and flanel shirts (and his work so far sucks ass.) judge bill powers isnt half-bad either, dont you think?

I'm following it. Not the most riveting reality competition show but the prize is a good one. It's not MoMA but having an exhibition at Brooklyn Museum is an excellent opportunity for these artists. I wonder how many times SJP will appear this season. ;)

miles is annoying, pretentious idiot. he looks like any skinny hipster in nyc.

really loving this show...so far any of their new niche competition shows after Project Runway and Top Chef haven't caught my attention (Top Design, Fashion Show(or whatever the PR rip off was called). But this one def has...I like seeing all the different artists and their views.

and yes I LOVE Miles! sure sometimes he comes off as pretentious but he also comes off as aloof and adorable...lol...but man the boy needs some sleep...I could pack for a month long trip in those bags.

and Eric is a hottie as well

I really think that Ryan(I think that's his name, the one that posed for the graphic artists vampire pics) could come out as a front runner soon...I feel like he's got some good stuff coming

Did you see the preview for next weeks episode, where they were talking about the artist who photographed a crucifix in a bottle of his urine? Is that art?

It depends on what your definition of art is. Some people think of art as painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. while other have a broader definition of art which includes video art, performance art, and installations. Some people think of art as being mimesis (representing the physical world), while others focus on the making of the object, and still others focus on the idea behind the art and less on the actual object.

I'm liking the show and the different style it's showcasing.

I'm sticking with it eventhough (sorry to say this) the majority of the artists annoy me. IMO stubborn Judith took the place of some other artist who would've played the game instead of resisting the theme of each challenge. This is reality TV, not some NPR-oriented cable network.

Is that art?
please, lets try to avoid that subject. whole books have been written about it, and there is still no, and never wil be, a conclusive objective answer. a much more manageable question is: do you think it is good art? as for andres serrano: i personally think hes an idiot and i find his art rather uninteresting. but he is an established artist.

anyone else get a little turned on hearing Miles talk about jerking off onto his picture last night? haha

In all reality though...NONE of those pieces were shocking in the slightest...but the right one did win.

dude miles shot a big load too on that painting lol

Nao I could understand getting the boot but John? And keeping Jamie Lynn and Eric over him? A big head scratcher IMO.

The judges must see something in Jamie Lynn that we don't. I keep feeling like Erik might have more potential somewhere inside of him. I liked his self portrait but haven't liked too much else that he's done. He definitely ruined his work by putting Sex Education on it as it made it look way too much like an album cover.

I am really not liking miles anymore. I just saw the most recent ep, and I agreed with who the judges sent home. Jon deserved to go home his painting looked like a 5 y/o did it.....great potential but executed horribly. Jamie Lynn, missed the point entirely BUT it was executed well. and Nao OMG that was lame beyond lame

thank goodness Jamie Lynn went home this week....she has talent as an artist...but I think more of like an illustrator...not a fine artist.

Ugh. If Eric would have kept his cool I believe Miles would have received the boot this week.

Miles comes off as such a pretentious person. Looks like the other artists are getting tired of him.

The last episode was so high school that I turned it off.

Completely agree but I'm there to the final...which I hope is soon. I'm thinking Miles vs. Nicole. Oh and Erik was an asshole but he said what a lot of us were thinking about Miles and/or Jaclyn (and deserves credit for that at least).
