ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency on Saturday, sacking the nation's top judge and blaming judicial interference in government and a wave of Islamic militant attacks.


Troops and police surrounded the Supreme Court in Islamabad, which had been due in coming days to give a verdict on the legality of military ruler Musharraf's victory in an October 6 presidential election.

I think from what I've read so far US & UK did everything they could diplomatically to stop this... More to do with internal politics in Pakistan - India has to be a bit afraid about now.

The US and Britain are today expected to demand that Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf, honour pledges to hold elections in the next two months and step down as the army chief, or face a cut in western support.

The diplomatic showdown will come in the form of a meeting in Islamabad between the Pakistani leader and a group of ambassadors, two days after he declared emergency rule - and three days after giving assurances to the prime minister, Gordon Brown, and the US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, that he would stick to an election deadline in mid-January, and step down as head of the country's army.

My first thought upon hearing about Musharraf's power grab was a vision of G-dub in the oval office saying "Dangit! Whah didn't AH think a'that!?!? . . .wait a minute! Ah still CAN!"

This might be the beginning of the end for Pakistan. I only see Islamic Fundamentalism coming out of this with much bloodshed and strife.

LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani security forces used tear gas and batons Monday on lawyers and journalists demonstrating against President Pervez Musharraf's weekend declaration of a state of emergency in Pakistan.

Thousands of journalists, attorneys, opposition figures and human rights representatives have been jailed in the crackdown that began Saturday when Musharraf declared the state of emergency, suspending the country's constitution and sparking the demonstrations.

Across the country, police stations are so packed with detainees that authorities have begun using schools as temporary holding cells.

Despite strong pressure from the United States, Britain and other countries to reverse his decision, Musharraf has been unresponsive and unapologetic, according to diplomatic officials who met Monday with the president to deliver their concerns, particularly about "heavy-handed" measures taken in Lahore.

According to a press release from Musharraf, "The president assured the diplomats that efforts were being made in a phased manner to move toward complete democracy."

OMG, I almost sort of maybe somewhat just agreed with SantaCBear... but only if he's acknowledging that Bush would do such a thing if he could get away with it in the slightest (he would, but he won't).

As the Bush Administration is obsessed with Iran nukes,and pushing so hard against Ahmedinejad that they inadvertently bulid his prestige and support in Muslim nations....they really should be intensively concerned with Pakistan and its power-hungry leader Pervez Musharraf.If we care so much about democracy in the region we should cut off our support for Musharraf and instead strongly buttress the democratic alternatives,among them former prime minister Benazir Bhutto who stand against the establishment of a fundamentalist religious state.If the Islamic hard liners can seize control the fact theat Pakistan is already a nuclear power will take on an even more dire,foreboding meaning.If we continue to coddle dictators for matters of expediency and self-interest,we will come to regret it enormously...and in this case,the consequences of still dealing with Musharraf could be catastrophic and devastating.
 
Well, clearly Bush has no intention of doing anything so I hope Democrats in Congress take action. But at this point, the US putting together an effective response will be very difficult.

Of course we should support Bhutto, but "support" is not enough.

After the monumental wake-up call of 9/11, and the eagerness of the rest of the world to join us in dealing with Islamic fundamentalism, Bush's destructive obsession with Iraq and Iran, and neglect of Afghanistan and Pakistan, is coming home to roost.
