Brokeback Mountain, One Year Later

Yeah, th music for this movie was nice. The movie itself though sucked, I just didn't care for it. I know there are a lot of fans out there, but I'm just not one of them.

Brokeback Mountain to me merely was just an ok movie. It had great cinematography. It was also so nice to see a movie with gay characters that did not have drag queens..... excessive tech-no music and AIDS. However this movie is not nearly as groundbreaking as it claims to be.... I had seen plenty of movies with gay story-lines. Making Love was done in the early eighties (horrible movie but it did deal with gay lovers). In more recent times there was Trick. With the exception of Michelle Williams very small role the acting is nothing to write home about. Further more this movie goes no where. It just goes on and on. Oh look they are sitting by a campfire. Oh look they are sitting by the river. Oh look now he's on a horse. If they had taken this story and changed it slightly (white man loves a black woman in the 60s) this movie would have not done so well. As for it not winning best picture-- I am sure there were many who voted against it because it had "gay" in it but in the end Crash was a better movie. The real tragedy of the night was that Ang Lee got the oscar for best directing. The movies so so box office performance demonstrates that for the most part people were not recommending it to friends or going back for a second viewing so I know I am not alone in my feeling that this movie is not that great. I actually think more critics were afraid of being labled as homophobic if they said what they really thought of this merely average film.
Ok I shall get off my soap box now and for those of you who loved the movie - cool enjoy it different strokes for different people :)

The Cure were actually honored as icons??? ummmm. I guess they felt they should honor somebody in each genre and Janet Jackson was to the pop/rock genre.

MTV is nothing short of an insult these days, though. Madonna is an institution already. She has been for about 15 years now. This chick will be remembered in 100 years in the same way Shakespeare is today.

Uh, I would argue that the controversy and a divided nation caused it's 'okay' box office turn out, not that 'people just didn't like it and didn't recommend it'. I could recommend it to Fred Phelps, that doesn't mean he'd go see it.

But all that aside, I loved the movie. It followed the story's somber and simplistic tone, great cinematography, all of which I chalk up to Ang Lee who does great movies Hulk excluded, great acting from everyone except Michelle Williams and Anne Hatheway only because there wasn't much for them to do, and present a gay relationship at it's foundation: two men who care for each other and a major box-office feature, unlike Trick, which was really only in indie circles.

Sometimes I think people only approve of fast/exciting/emotionally charged movies and that simple, subtle, and poignant films are lost on them.

Sorry, for me it was a boring movie. Not bad, but I know better "gay movies". "L.A.Crash" won the Acardemy Award and that was the right choice because it`s a very good movie.

Well I hope this movie is worth all the hype - after reading this thread earlier today, I thought it was time I invested in a copy - so I popped into town and hopefully picked up a bargain @ £5.00 - if it can make a "hard" guy like BenBrowdersArse cry, then I will be prepared to shed a tear or two when I watch it later tonight:cry:

Am I one of the last people on JUB to see it?

You might just be, haha. No, there are some guys on this board who adamantly refuse tos ee it for some odd reason or another. ::shrug::

For me BBM is the greatest film ever made. I've watched it three times at the movies an several times on DVD. I was a little disappointed in the special features. I really hope that the 2-Disc-Special-Edition which is supposed to be released on January 23rd 2007 will finally include an audio commentary and deleted scenes.

I was a little underwhelmed by the time I saw it this summer. I think it was so overhyped that it raised my expectations to an unrealistic level. It was a solidly made film that had instances that gay guys could relate to. I even bought the DVD.

I'm planning to boycott Oscar next year.

Say, is Trevor, the gay short film the first ever to win an Oscar for any category?

Well I've seen it at long last - it wasn't what I had hoped for or expected. There is no denying that it was a good watchable movie and that it was beautifully shot. I could have done with having the subtitles on, as I found it very hard to follow Heath Ledgers' dialogue.
I think I will have to give it another viewing to decide whether or not I rate it as a classic - having said this, it did leave me feeling quite emotional at the end - and typically I felt sorry for me, it made me realise that "real" love is worth fighting for no matter what, and that I hate and fear being on my own.

Oh, and I instantly fell in love with Jake - he stole the film for me (minus the mustache).

I agree with the comments made by Luminum - it's subtlety gave the movie an edge and probably made it appealing to a wider audience.
