It is pretty difficult to get HIV by swallowing infected semen. Some scientists are testing to see whether or not the virus can pass through some mucus membranes in the throat, but it has been generally accepted that swallowing forces semen to pass through the throat too quickly for it to pass through the membranes themselves. When it gets to the stomach, the virus is obliterated by stomach acid.

The only way it can infect you is by passing through your gums (which is a very low probability of happening, a bit higher if you have any small cuts like from brushing or flossing right before sex) or if you have an open wound in your mouth.

Either swallow or spit. Both are safer than leaving it in your mouth.

Listen everyone who is going to answer this question for this young man. It's not fair to tell him "No you can't get it from swallowing". Studies have shown that its far more infrequent to transmit through oral sex. However again there are the issues with cuts and sores anywhere in the mouth or gums that most people would not even be aware that they have, if bodily fluid from an infected person comes into contact with that opening, then there is a much higher chance of becoming infected by HIV. Even if its 99% likely that you "will not" become infected by HIV through oral sex, that 99% still means that on average 1 out of every 100 will still be infected.

IF THERE IS STILL A 1% CHANCE THAT YOU CAN GET HIV THIS WAY, AND A 99% CHANCE THAT YOU CANNOT, IT IS NOT CORRECT TO ANWSER "NO YOU CANNOT GET HIV THROUGH ORAL SEX"!

Please don't narrow your scope to HIV either, nearly every other STD can easily be transmitted through oral sex.

and its plain wrong, whilst the risk of HIV is lower with oral sex than with anal or vaginal sex it is definitely still a small risk, and you most definitely can still contract other infections including :

Chlamydia
Gonorrhea
Hep A
Herpes
HPV (warts)
Syphilis

So the risk is failry low for HIV but definitely still present and the risk is not low for these other infections, know your partners status and be safe if there infected or unknown.

For many STDs, swallowing cum or pre-cum is not really a factor; you can catch them just by contact. In many but not all cases (and depending on the STD) you may experience some symptoms within days of the encounter but it could also be weeks. Not unless his esophagus has a cut in it. Once it's in the stomach, it's not a problem. So the answer to his initial question was, in fact, "No."

And no one told the poster that "You cannot get HIV from oral sex," which is what Madman accused posters of doing. You can get HIV from oral sex. But barring a ripped up throat and esophagus and a torn up stomach, no, you can't get HIV from the act of swallowing. It passes too quickly to transfer through mucus membranes in the throat and the rest of the esophagal tissues are not mucus membrane, and the pH level of the stomach is too hostile for the virus to survive.

What ridiculous nitpicking, so what your saying is as long as it doesnt have to go past your lips, gums, oral mucosa, oropharynx and oesophagus then you dont have to worry about STD's and HIV??? So as long as the person directly injects the semen through a PEG tube into their stomach theyll be fine. Well back here in the real world where swallowing does involve the mouth throat and oesophagus it IS possible to get both HIV and other STD's from swallowing semen.

No, what I'm saying is that if he has a quantity of semen in his mouth that is riddled with HIV, spitting it out or swallowing it will both equivalently reduce his risk. It's pointing out the fact that the most high risk thing to do after having potentially infected semen in his mouth is to keep it there because it can pass through the mucosal membranes in his gums, where he's more likely to have micro-dermabrasions. But where it WON'T infect him is in his throat or his stomach for the reasons I mentioned.

He can either keep the majority of infected semen in his mouth, where it has a greater chance of infecting him or he can spit or swallow, which will remove the majority of the substance that could infect him with HIV.

It won't protect him from other STDs, but I am addressing the HIV issue.

The greater suggestion is to have sex with people you know, people whose statuses you know, or to always use a condom. But since people are people, and not robots, they may not always follow those three suggestions. Since the poster probably already swallowed semen, then neither of those three things are options to him now, though they are there for his consideration in the future.

It as academic to argue about spitting vs swallowing vs holding in the mouth as all three involve contact with a delicate mucous membrane and potentially infected ejaculate and all three have a risk of infection, the question was not which is the highest, it was is there a risk and the answer is yes.

Yes, he risks any of the other STDs and it's important because risk is NOT negligible in these cases.

It's important to inform a person about the risk for HIV, regardless of probability, but it's also important to explain the context of risk in the scale of possible infection so people don't blow an artery stressing out about what they really don't have to.

While HIV isn't the only thing he could catch, its arguably the one he should be most concerned about, since the rest can be classified/treated as STI's.
