I work every second Saturday and today was suppossed to be my day off but on Friday I got asked to work... and I said no four times but somehow ended up saying yes, possibly because my manager kept saying money money money overtime rates. I did earn $293 for one day's work but I am still pissed that I had to work.

Does anybody else have a problem with saying no to people. I don't really have a problem with saying no, just with certain people.
 
Some people have no problem saying 'no'. I'm not one of them. I can recall once working 3 12-hour shifts in a row because I couldn't say 'no'.

No problem saying No to my employer.
I find it hard to say No to my family and friends in moments of weakness - this really depends on my mood at the time though.
 
If it's work I can say no easily, but I usually take the overtime and just save the cash. If it's family I have a hard time saying no in any instance. I'm weak when it comes to family it seems.
 
I don't have a problem with saying no, it is the shortest complete sentence in the english language. I do however have a few conditions and considerations when dealing with peoples requests.

I try to remember that if I want to excell in an environment it should be used sparingly with people of authority. I stress Want because there are some settings, especially social ones, that i simply do not wish to be considered a figure of authority.

Authority is illusory. Responsibility is the real issue there, and I dont want to be responsible for a social group. You are not trying to get a job done, you are trying to create a happy environment, and since people are all made happy in different ways, it is a fools game.

If it is a social situation I use it whenever I feel like it. I am there for enjoyment, not compliance, and while one doesn't rule out the other, I usually wont give up my fun to placate another persons need to control. Some tend to view my lack of compliance as me being controlling, yet that is illusory, short sighted, and narrow minded. If you feel someone is being controlling merely by exerting their own will on their own choices, then you have serious control isssues of your own.

If it is a proffesional sitiuation I use it much more sparingly, remembering, as you did SB, that I profit from saying yes instead; either emediately as in extra pay or in the long term, as in being upwardly mobile and in line for a raise.

I also notice that if asked nicely and respectfully in ANY environment by someone i care for or respect, I will usually aquiesce to any request. If threatened or treated rudely, I will simply not comply. I do not reward abusive, arrogant or demeaning behavior with compliance. It is that simple.

So I guess my answer is that I make those choices on a case by case basis, depending on the environment, the person who makes the request, and the tone and method of the request.

I can say no to my family all the time. I can say no to my friends when I need to. Maybe I just don't want to appear as though I am letting someone down.
 
If I say No, I'd probaly still do it..depending what it was..

Actually scrap that, Im a fucking lazy teenager..

I have a problem saying 'no' definitely. It's a curse. Especially at work. For some reason it's this outdated work ethic I have but don't know why. I guess I keep thinking "If I don't do it, no-one else will, and it needs done". I totally resent it though. In fact I hate it. And I don't want to do it anymore. I;m tired of being treated like a mug, taken for granted for this disgracefully low rate of pay. :cry:
 
Yea I have the same problem, particularly at work.

I can usually technically work and just don't want to.. so I get put on the spot and asked to work and can't think of a logical excuse before sounding stupid.
 
Yeah, i hate to let people down. Even when they say no pressure, that adds more pressure for me. But I like the feeling of being needed.
 
At least you got paid for extra hours of work, I always say yes when they ask me to stay pass 5:30 or to come on Saturdays, and I don’t get remunerated for those hours, but I do it with pleasure, I have a good and respectable job and have a good salary, and my boss is such a great employer that I do not have a problem when there is work that have to be done at extra hours.

I also have a good and respectable job, earn a decent amount and my boss is also a great employer. But my job can get very draining. Next week when I get paid I will be happy with the extra money but its not about money. In the last 14 days I have had one day off and I am suppossed to have 4. I also often stay back extra hours sometimes for free... but on my days off I don't want to have to do anything related with work at all.

I understand what you are saying; I also get tired sometimes with the lack of free time from all my responsibilities, but that the price you sometimes have to pay in this competitive world. What my boss do is from time to time is to give us a couple of paid days off, when there is no much work to do.

And every time he travels he brings us presents, he is such a great man that is why I enjoy my work place very much.
