Charlotte Gainsbourg / Jan. 19, 2010 / Brooklyn, NY (Bell House)

Tuesday's show (Jan. 19), which was her first ever in the U.S. and reportedly her first live concert of any significance anywhere, demonstrated that a first time is a first time, regardless of one's theoretical preparation.

Q&A
French Chanteuse Charlotte Gainsbourg

In 2007, the French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg underwent emergency surgery after doctors discovered she had suffered a brain hemorrhage months earlier in a waterskiing accident. While the procedure was a success, Gainsbourg was so rattled by the incident that she insisted on undergoing brain scans for several months afterward to make sure she was all right. To overcome her paranoia, she eventually threw herself into her music, teaming with eclectic alt-rocker Beck to record her third album, IRM, released in the U.S. on Jan. 26. Gainsbourg also took a lead role in the Lars von Trier film Antichrist, which required her to attack Willem Dafoe with a shovel and simulate mutilating her own genitals. For her troubles, she won the Best Actress Award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Gainsbourg — the daughter of French singer Serge Gainsbourg and British model Jane Birkin — spoke with TIME about working with Beck, her father's musical legacy and growing up in one of France's most famous families.

Actress, singer, and ambassador for all things infinitely cool and French Charlotte Gainsbourg is bringing her LP IRM to life this April with a two-week North American tour. The trek includes a set at this year's Coachella.

And if you're as into IRM as I am, you may appreciate a behind-the-scenes mini-doc about the record filmed by Charlotte's son Ben, who is 12 years old and already cooler than you or I will ever be. To watch click "REHEARSAL."

Charlotte Gainsbourg Announces New EP and Double Album Release Date

On September 6, Charlotte Gainsbourg will release the Terrible Angels EP on Because Music/Elektra. The EP features two unreleased songs: the title track, written and produced by Gainsbourg's IRM collaborator Beck, and "Memoir", written by Conor O'Brien, aka Villagers. It also includes a live version of "Terrible Angels" and a live cover of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman".

In addition, the EP contains two videos: one for the live version of "Just Like a Woman" and one for the title track. Directed by Nathalie Canguilhem, the clip follows Gainsbourg as she discovers a very strange (and very choreographed) occurance in a parking garage. What, exactly, she discovers is kind of amazing.

The Terrible Angels EP is a precursor to Gainsbourg's forthcoming double-LP of live and unreleased material, now titled Stage Whisper, which will be released November 8. It features 11 live tracks and seven studio tracks.

Charlotte Gainsbourg talks von Trier’s “Melancholia”

The Anglo-French singer-actress talks about playing Kirsten Dunst's normal sister, and that famous "Nazi" meltdown

Lars von Trier’s film “Melancholia,” which is surely one of the most spectacular screen achievements of recent years, is built around a series of dynamic opposites, or apparent opposites. It’s most obviously a movie about love and death: Its first half consists of a loosey-goosey, Ingmar Bergman-style marriage comedy with a large ensemble cast, while its second half is a darker and more intimate drama about a family facing the end of the world. It’s a story about two planets: Our beautiful blue one, home to the only known life in the universe, and a bigger, darker one called Melancholia, which has been hiding behind the sun and arrives to put an end to all that. It’s an allegory about an internal and invisible ailment, crippling depression, and one of the most potent and effective visions of science-fiction apocalypse ever brought to the screen.

Venice First Look: New Poster And Image For Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac Vol II — Director's Cut'

How much more can you take? With the theatrical version of Lars von Trier's two part epic "Nymphomaniac" already sprawling over four hours, there's still his director's cut to contend with. The first volume of his uncensored vision debuted earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival (our review), and now volume two heads to Venice and a new image and hilarious poster have arrived.
