I'm in the Chicago area, too. There are a lot of nice places in Chicago such as bars, friendly neighborhoods, etc. You should be able to fiind a nice comfort level here in time.

Chicago area here, though I live in one of the most uncool areas... Hydepark. And yes I go to the UofC.

Sadly I'll be leaving the city in less than 2 months though time flies especially when you're in college.
