Cloverfield director Matt Reeves is eager to make a sequel to the hit movie - but he is struggling to think of a storyline.

The cult horror thriller grossed more than $170 million worldwide despite being shot on a relatively low budget of $25 million.

Fans are eager to see a second installment but Reeves admits he and producer J.J. Abrams are struggling to come up with new ideas.

He says, "At times it's gone dormant and then it's come back up again. There are a couple ideas that have potential but we haven't quite cracked it yet."

Reeves also revealed he may consider giving up the director's hot seat if he can't find a breakthrough.

He adds: "There was the thought that maybe we'd bring in some young exciting people and we'd produce their take.

"I don't know at this point... I think if we find something that would be incredibly fun to make and that we would want to watch then that's what would push it over the top. It's a weird puzzle."

I read somewhere that they had an idea of doing, not really a sequel, but doing the same thing reporting the same exact event but from the military point of view. That would be cool.

That first movie sucked big time.

How hard did they have to shake the video cams during the filming? Mine is like 5 years old and has a motion dampener.

The idea of revisiting the monster attack but from another point of view is a safe but coherent choice.
Unless the destructive visitor has survived the nuclear attack and then decided to expand his demolition tour elsewhere.

Just leave it with the original, please.

I remember a time when a film could make millions of dollars and be left alone...

why bother coming up with a storyline considering the first one lacked anything resembling coherent storytelling.

Hmm, I dunno.

They put so much effort into coming up with so much backstory for the first film, and most people just went to see it at without reading anything and missed out on it completely.

Imagine people wanting the story to explained IN the film rather than via hidden myspace messages... such a radical concept.

May I add the "backstory" they came up with was really not that detailed or original. It's just Godzilla again the only thing edgy about it was the way in which they released information. It's all style over substance.

Yeah, what the sequel needs is the first one to be undone.

Really? No plot ideas for a sequel? I guess it's time to call in the five-year olds. It isn't like their older counterparts are going to have anything more productive to add.

if you can't think up a story, then I think it's time to shelf the idea. The first one wasn't too fabulous anyways...a modern telling of Godzilla.

Chances are they won't think of a good premise. I say leave well enough alone and scrap the sequel. 'Cloverfield' was amazing, and I don't think any sequel will live up to it.

Wasn't the monster supposed to be a baby? HINT HINT

That's what Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams said.

I wonder if they will use the quick shot at the end of that unidentified object crashing on the sea near to the rollercoaster, as a starting point...

I must be one of the few who actually liked the movie. Though the shaky camera did give me a headache. I liked all the hidden things in the movie. Made it fun.
