Nespresso-Comparison.jpg

PAWS posted a thread asking if Nestle's has completely lost their minds, and it reminded me of something from 10 years ago:

Is Nespresso still a thing?

How much would you spend for coffee? I'm not into premium coffee on a daily basis but an occasional treat is fine.
Nespresso machines come in a variety of sizes, from single-shot countertop size to commercial restaurant units:

I think Nespresso is still sold here. I prefer tea to coffee, but when I do make it I use a cafetiere rather than any fancy gadgets.

Originally being a Swiss brand, Nespresso is still the most popular capsule system in this country and also the most expensive one. Just like printers and ink cartridges, the machines can be rather cheap, but the capsules are what they make money with. You can bring used capsules back to the stores for recycling, but it's still a dumb idea. I'm currently using a pour over cone with ground coffee, way cheaper.

My old drip coffee maker woks well and I try different brands of ground and whole-bean coffees.
One of my favorites is Medaglia D Oro.

I have two nespresso machines. They’re great and the coffee is excellent. They average 70 cents or so a capsule..so, yeah, it’s a thing..

Still, one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had was a cup of hobo coffee.

Keurig Coffee Makers got me used to the idea of single serve, Nespresso takes the next step with your choice of machines.

The "no cup" soft pods are a nice touch.

I see the commercial with George Clooney now and then so I guess it's still going. I'm not mad about coffee.

Almost every hotel room I've been in for the last few years has had a Nespresso machine. Great advertising for the company. They probably discount them heavily just to get them in the rooms. I recently flew out of Rome and found that the large, beautiful Priority Pass lounge had staff preparing espresso to order, while the small, ordinary seeming Alitalia lounge had--to my surprise--Nespresso machines. To its credit the latter lounge did have Richard Ginori china, and the espresso cups were beautiful.

We took a chance on Cameron's ground coffee on Amazon and we're not expecting much.

You get a 2 pound bag for $9.98. It's pretty damn good. They are calling it a light roast breakfast blend but it is a strong roast for me. Similar to Starbucks Pike Place medium roast. But it has a mellowness to it.

Nice :)

I remember seeing that mentioned in a sales flier. I was curious, but didn't get around to getting to that partiuclar store. Maybe next time...

I *think* I hear the Nespresso name still, but I'm not sure. The big name I hear is Keurig.

I don't have and don't really want a system like that. Too expensive buying the coffee and I hate the packaging waste. I've never had Nespresso coffee, but I never liked Keurig. Although I will admit that the office of a therapist I saw a few years ago hanged from cheap instant coffee to Keurig in the waiting room, and it was an improvement.

But is Nespresso coffee good enough to be served in the finest restaurants like Folgers instant?

I remember that. My Mom and her twin sister drank Folgers Crystals. Eventually they switched to Tasters Choice and talked about it every time they made a cup.
