I was wondering if coming out has effected anyones professional career?
I am 29 yo bi in a gay relationship. We both love each other very much so it is going to happen soon. I don't plan on broadcasting it, but these things have a way of giving around. I work in the medical field. What should I expect?

The only thing I would precaution against, is there are still some states that have a "I don't need a reason to fire you" policy..

Otherwise, don't broadcast it (like you said), but I'd say play it by ear. Most of the time at work, someone asked me about my social / love life, and I kind of nonchalantly acknowledged the fact that I was gay.

No fuss, no big reveal, just a matter of fact.

It just depends on what makes you comfortable, and whether your work environment is one you feel comfortable enough in to open yourself up to like that.

Yeah, you can still get fired here in Texas for being gay. I guess the real problem is that I work when some family members, so it will get around. Lol

There is nothing that says you have to be out in the workplace. I looked to see what protections were in place before I came out at work.

This is just a very personal thing for me, but I have strict work/personal life boundaries as it is already, so to me, it's nobody's business at work.

I wouldn't necessarily feel the need to broadcast it, or even be out at work, though if someone asked me, or the situation warranted me to be truthful, then I would be.

It's a judgement call depending on the person, co-worker, or workplace environment.

Depends on the enviroment. When i first started even the GM was openly homophobic. But by the time i was promoted the homophobes had gone. If there are gay people already in management etc i'd assume you could feel safe.

if someone would come to ask you, i suppose to be honest, if not then you dont have to tell them anything. they are co-workers after all, not friends.
