I really hate conformity. Why should everyone behave/look like/think like everyone else? There seems to be such pressure on us to be just like the person next to you. Yet at the same time people are encouraged to be individuals. This starts at such a young age too! In schools today (and I remember this when I was young too) young kids are taught that "we are all unique, and thats o.k----------as long as you are just like the people around you."
What angers me especially is the suicide rate among teens and young adults who are gay and feel like outcasts. I know all teens, and adults, deal with peer pressure, but it's even harder for gay teens. Even today when "it" is more socially acceptable, there is still a great deal of pressure on them to be straight. They are told "love yourself for who you are-----as long as WE accept it too."
Well, I'm sorry, but conformity is boring. Yes, I know that without some kind of agreement, that there would BE no society-----but conformity/agreement should never be complete. I respect those who push the boundaries a bit, even if I don't agree with them. It forces us to try to see things from another, sometimes opposing, point of view. And to me, that's good! So many new inventions, and social changes, came about because people thought Outside The Box. Friction, and sometimes chaos, have brought about many changes in our world.
I have the most respect for people who have the courage to be themselves, even if, and especially if, it annoys everyone around them.
People need to realize one thing. There IS no majority. There is only the illusion of one. If everyone had the guts to be themselves, they would see that the majority doesn't even exist.
