since valentine's day is approaching, my local paper has began running feature in the lifestyles section where you can write a message to the one you love, professing your love. i've never been a fan of public displays of affection such as these. i've always felt if i love someone, they're gonna know it; i don't have to publicly broadcast. still, i have been reading them the past week. it intrigues me to see if people who do this type of thing are creative in what they profess, or if they say the same old stuff.
after reading for a few days, i began noticing one person was writing in every day. he was writing at length about his love for his girlfriend; often being tangential, and more often being sickeningly sweet. today was the 7th day he wrote in. every single day for 7 days he has written something about how much he is in love. sometimes it's been meandering talk about her beautiful hair, beautiful eyes, beautiful skin, etc. other times it's been poems he's written. but always it's with the same prose that almost sends me into a sugar coma.
after reading today's submission, i began thinking: why is this guy doing this so many times? why, in my opinion, is he running this into the ground? is this guy trying to convince this girl he loves her; is he trying to convince himself he loves her; and is he really convincing anybody at all. when people do things to the extreme, such as this, i always wonder what the underlying reason is. ok dude, i get the point. you love the girl, but why do you have to pound this home so often and so hard....what's really going on?
i also wonder if people publicly profess their love, are they also going to go public when, and if, they break up? the week after valentine's day is there gonna be a section in the paper for people who got dumped? "yeah, i wrote 15 essays and 10 poems to this chick tellin' her how much i love her, then she dumps my ass." they might as well be saying "yeah, i know i looked kinda stupid doing that shit, but now will you feel sorry for me?"
