You probably should have just told them that you believe they are totally in the wrong and to stop using the old testament as a weapon since it is only the cherry picked portion of a a huge mass of writings by hundreds of guys. It isn't as though it is the literal word of god.

It is pretty 'American' though for them to want to protect their rights and freedoms by denying them to others.
