Is this similar to hitting "rock bottom" where the best I can do to find someone to play with is an online sexed up version of the newspaper's classified ads?

It's a "meat market" and if that's all you expect from it that's fine. It is what it is. If you're looking for anything beyond a trick, your time would be better spent meeting people somewhere else. Expect to be disappointed and frustrated. Lot's of liars, phonies, con artists. If you have the patience to weed through all that, go for it. You will also find that everyone on there wants sex but nobody wants to host. Do you really want a total stranger showing up at your front door? Then there are the picture collectors who have no intention of meeting anyone. They just want your pictures. The "quality" of craigslist depends on where you live. In my area, it is pretty much considered a joke or a "last resort". Finally, as bw92116 said, be REAL careful if you do decide to "play".

I guess it's acceptable. A lot of guys use it. It's just not acceptable to me. I prefer meeting people in real time.
 
Awhile ago I was going to meet up with someone. And although the picture was hot and seemed legit, I figured that it would be better if I didn't go through it. I'll meet plenty of other guys...and it'd actually be better if my first time with a guy would be something meaningful.
 
It seems like there is a lot of activity on the site locally here, it all just seems very shady and maybe just a tad creepy... I guess when I really think about it, it is probably something to be avoided.

Well, in my experience, online hookups aren't too bad. It's true, though: I wouldn't expect anything other than sex, but if that is all you're after, then Craigslist can be pretty helpful. Also, if you are into bi-curious guys, then it's a good place to go because most bi-curious guys would never have the balls to show up at a gay club looking for some action, so they have to do it online, where they can hide their names and such. And lastly, I think Craigslist, and other dating/hookup websites for that matter, are good places to turn when you live in a smaller community. I live in a medium-sized town, and the gay scene is definitely less than vibrant. So if you don't have a lot of gay bars to go to, give it a try because if your town is anything like mine, you don't have too many other options. Good luck, man!
 
Go out and date. Its a lot more fun than random hook-ups. Safer too.
