If you want to loose weight fast, cut out the bread and pasta. They provide empty calories and slap the fat on. Cut out anything white in your diet, no rice, no bread, no pasta, no potatoes. If you must eat pasta or bread, eat whole grain only. Pasta is particularly bad in the evening. Again, if you must have pasta, eat it for lunch. Eat the veggies for your evening meal.

Instead of focusing on trying to lose weight, why not workout, tone up a bit and trim some of extra water weight with cardio and eating healthy?

If you lose 20 pounds this quickly, you're going to be weak and cranky and not very much fun when this guy visits.

On the other hand, if you work on getting into shape, you'll have more energy, you'll feel better and you might like the way you look naked.

Just a thought...

The crunches and pushups aren't going to burn many calories and aren't going to cause much weight loss, but will develop your muscles in those areas (pushups will strengthen your arms and pecs).

I would suggest you walk for 1 hour per day nonstop. Take a walk around your neighborhood in a big loop, and if only 30 minutes have passed, do the loop again. Walking, running, swimming, cycling are the aerobic activities that will burn the calories. It doesn't matter which one. Walking is gentle to your body and still burns the calories.

Then walk another hour in the evening. Or do the swimming, that's also good.

I do yoga at night before going to sleep; it won't burn a lot of calories but it will keep you flexible and will help you sleep better.

As far as eating, most real diets have you eating frequently (5 or even 6 times per day) but very small amounts. Medi-Fast is 6 things, like their shake or their bar, each one is barely 100 calories. You don't have to be that severe, but just eat light, sensible, healthy food. Eliminate sugar, soda, all refined carbs such as white breads, etc. Some people, like Mario Lopez, say don't eat any carbs at all after 3 pm. I don't know, but look at his body, he must know what he's talking about.

Get a lot of sleep, that makes you look better.

And you will need to quit smoking sooner or later, for several reasons, not for how you look. It's deadly, but I'm sure you've been preached to before so I won't go into that. Smoke smells bad and people who smoke smell bad, you can smell it on their breath and in their house. A major turn-off. Rid your house of that.

I wouldn't worry about the coffee, if you cut that back, you might be sleepy or have headaches. Caffeine is much easier to "kick the habit" than nicotine is. You just stop drinking anything with caffeine, and for a couple of days you're sleepy and might have headaches, then that's all gone and you're normal again. If you are going to do that, do it now so that it's all over with before he's there.

Realize that you are a beautiful man and that's why he's coming to see you. Forget about looking for flaws in your appearance, take an inventory of what's appealing about you.

Just as important, in fact probably even more important, as how you look, is your mood when you're with him. You must blast away all negative thoughts and any bad feelings. It's crucial that you must be in a good mood, be fun, happy and funny. Your mood will affect him and how he feels when he's with you.

You need to be casual, relaxed, fun to be with, laughing, spontaneous, interested, warm, loving and "alive." Practice putting yourself in those moods starting right now. Do whatever puts you in those moods, watch silly videos, whatever makes you laugh. He will feel your happy, positive, fun mood and he will feel good around you. You must be in a good mood. How he feels when he's with you is much more important than how you look. How he felt is what he will remember.

Losing 10-20 pounds in 3 weeks isnt very realistic

Its not healthy to lose more than 2 pounds a week

I watched 'fat sick and nearly dead' on tv the other night. He seemed to get good results without any apparent ill results according to blood tests. I didn't like it for one main thing... no fibre. He followed the juicing approach whereas I would think a smoothie approach (with all the fruit and veggie fibre intact) would be a safer approach.

However I am a firm believer in doing it the right way, slow but steady. Crash and fad diets are exactly what they are called. Permanently changing your diet for a healthier one is the best option.

If you would LIKE to drop some water-weight though, people have apparently gotten good results from the 'kick-start' diet. It is basically a big pot of veggie soup, mostly celery with all the leaves, diced tomato for the base, non-starchy veggies etc.

They only do it for about a week and people tend to drop 2-5kg quickly which is supposed to act as a motivation to start them on the right track of changing their diet and exercise approaches.

When my Mom was in the hospital for a week once, I spent most of my time there, eating nothing but salads at the hospital cafeteria, and I lost 7 pounds in 10 days. That may not work for some people, but salads (with only a tiny bit of dressing) and Vietnamese food like pho soup are very light and healthy ways to eat.

Ashy, self-improvement is not an emergency - it's just a direction you point yourself in. Go at a sustainable pace.

As far as impressing someone, the truth is that 10 pounds one way or the other will not make or break someone's perception of you (unless that person has serious body issues of his own).

Kara is on the right track.

I've lost 26 pounds since New Years...

I bumped up my % of calories from lean protein (close to 75%)
Added 3-4 fruits per day
Nothing white (or try not to)
Increased my veggie intake
I drink a lot of water (replacing a lot of the coffee I used to drink)
Cut out most alcohol (maybe 1 or 2 drinks per week. It was one a day)
Eliminate most fats, except olive oil
I walk 1 hour per day
Do a few sets of pushups

That's it. Never felt better.

Smart way to do it ^^

Plenty of protein = keeps you fuller.
complex carbs
water instead of sugar
olive oil is a good monounsaturated fat.
Alcohol... the devil. I had a 6 pack the other day after being dry for a while, felt like shit the next day :(

Dear Ash - Several factors come into play. One, your age. When you are younger, it is easier to drop weight. Also, where you start from. Sounds like around 180? The trip from 180 to 160-170 is in some ways harder than that from 300 to 180. When you are very large, you burn more energy walking across the floor than someone else might climbing stairs, etc. Men lose weight relatively (to women) easily. I don't believe anyone has mentioned drinking water....literally 8 + glasses per day. Watch your sodium intake. Experience (mine) shows that most folks can do anything for about 3 weeks. If you go to Jenny or Nutrisystem, they will put you on 1000-1200 cal, low sodium diet, make you drink a lot of water, lay off caffeine and increase your activity level. You can Google a 1000 or 1200 calorie diet online. You can modify it to use complex carbohydrates...whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables (lists are online). Get a food scales and a measuring cup and measuring spoons. Most people have no sense of what 3 oz. of meat or 1/2 cup of orange juice is. In the US we eat like pigs because its there. Try to focus on internal (my stomach and energy level are telling me I'm hungry) stimuli vs. external stimuli (I am stressed and there's no dick around so I need chocolate cake). Moreover, if you have been playing with your weight over time, you may have a sense of a set-point to which your body gravitates again and again. Depending on your height, 180 should not be a bad thing. Lose 10, and hit the gym to add them back constructively to your upper body, legs and glutes rather than your waste and gut. There are also online free programs that you can track your calories, activity, etc.) to help you stay aware of your progress.

The fastest diet, without question, is the VERY low carbohydrate diet. Think of it as a NO carb diet. Meat, eggs, no-carb protein powder (read the label), low carb veggies, i.e. broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower, celery, asparagus. Some cardio exercize every day; walking, jogging (is better) swimming. 10 minutes is enough to trigger the weight loss.
You might feel hungry and low energy the first 48 hours. After that the body will produce ketones (measure with Ketostix from the drug store). You will then feel great with lots of energy, no hunger. But if you eat too many carbs you will stop the process, you will actually get hungry or craving, and need to start all over.
This is the original Atkins diet, but too many people tried to include some carbs and it becomes an entirely different, non-ketogenic diet, and people decided it did not work. A lot of research has been done low carb, ketogenic diets if you use Google.

I should add, 10 lbs in three weeks would be easy, 20 possible depending on metabolism and whether you stop the process with too many carbs. Some of the loss on the scale is a slight dehydration as the low carbs cause salt/sodium loss and the body holds less water. Those pounds will come back in a day or so when you get off the diet.
