I have a problem with my credit card that I haven't been able to get to the bottom of and resolve and wonder if anyone has knowledge of how to fix it. Months ago, after hearing that my credit information was stolen along with millions of other people's, I put a stop to opening new credit for me at all three credit bureaus individually. Sunday I tried to order and charge a $70-$80 lunch at Bob Evans restaurant and was told that I don't have sufficient credit, which is untrue. I was able to pay cash for it, but this isn't the first time I have had trouble. I had a problem with a book order from Amazon a couple of months ago as well. I have called my credit card company and have been told that my credit is okay with them, and Amazon has said that they don't have my credit blocked, and Bob Evans has said that their machine blocked my credit because of my bank. No one seems to have a problem at their end and I can't get to the cause of the problem to resolve it. Is it possible that the three credit bureaus have blocked all new charges even on existing accounts instead of just opening new accounts, as I thought? Although I think that I have still had monthly recurring charges coming through and a few other charges as well. ? Besides having difficulty talking to anyone live, I am stymied. ? Thanks.

The problem is likely a fraud prevention service that is protecting your account. Some banks outsource the transaction screening process to a third party. As you noted, it probably isn’t a credit issue, but an overzealous effort to prevent unauthorized use of the card. The problems you described seem to involve purchasing online. I would contact the card issuer and ask that they consider imposing a less restrictive algorithm for your card. If they seem unable to do that, maybe get them to issue a new card number for your account.
 
Thank you. It is hard to contact anyone since there is no face to face contact possible. I will mull over this and may unblock my credit at the three credit bureaus and take my chances. I would have to do this anyway if I want to apply for new credit to buy a new car next year or get a new credit card.

I had the same trouble you're having but 10 years ago. My credit card was issued by a bank and the card account was hobbled by "theft of cardholder information alerts", issued by credit reporting agencies.

My bank's customer service recommended completely closing my card account - and opening a new account under the bank's re-issue secure account access.

Only upon receiving a new card, after voiding my old account, did my purchase access problems come to an end. Having a card I couldn't use made no sense, so it was worth the hassle.
