At noon on Christmas Eve, I was scrolling through my Facebook and "POOF!!!" All of a sudden my cursor disappeared, as if I didn't even a mouse! Of course, all the nearby stores that could have provided a new one were closed. By some X-mas MIRACLE, the Dollar General had a $10 mouse, and my sister smuggled it to me this morning, so I wrapped it in "Santa's" gold wrapping and addressed it to me.

I hid it by our tree, but just behind the couch ... lol, and it took my son almost an hour to chance upon it! He was more excited than me!!!

I still don't know what caused that mouse to go out, as it was the first time that that ever happened to me -- even when I used to us those wireless ones.

Sounds like you got it resolved with the purchase of a new one. :)

But in terms of troubleshooting the old (did you toss it out?), it could be a few things - hardwire wise, A) the mouse could physically be dying, B) your computer's USB port could be bad/flaky, or C) the USB cable running between (attached to) the mouse and port is going (shorted, or working in one cable position and not the other).

Software wise, it can often be a driver issue or something clobbered it in an update or some conflict there. Did you try a good cold (computer shut-off completely, wait 10 seconds, restart) reboot using the keyboard? Or switching the mouse to a different USB port? (Sometimes that's enough to make Windows redetect it properly.) You didn't specify if you're Windows or Mac, and what version of your OS, but you can also go to your "Device Manager" (search it with Start --> Run) and fice the "Mouse"/"Mice and Other Pointing Devices" section, right-click on your mouse, and choose "Uninstall". Once you unplug your mouse and plug it back in, or reboot, if it's physically fine Windows should detect it and reinstall standard drivers (you can also get specific ones from the vendor's website).

Because it could be so many things like the above, the "process of elimination"/troubleshooting steps are a few to go through. The first thing is usually trying it on another computer (or any device with a USB port that supports a mouse, some media/TV boxes support this, etc.) and seeing what results you get, or trying a spare/extra mouse on your same computer where you're having the mouse issues. It sounds like you didn't have a spare one but one recommendation for a PC troubleshooting "kit" is a cheap USB mouse that you can throw in there.

Thank you, Mr. trinket ... and yes to most of the above; I even hooked up said mouse to my son's lap top and nada.

Lol ... the joy of scrimping when it comes to electronics is evidencing itself! The cursor is working fine and dandy on my recently purchased $8.99 mouse, but it is also double and even triple-clicking at the slightest touch! It will suffice until next weekend when my son and I go in for our monthly haircuts.
