It all started as a Southern California Film School assignment from 1970 to 1972.
Then John Carpenter expanded the project into a feature length film about an intergalactic demolition crew that runs into an unforeseen problem:

One of their "smart bombs" has gained sentience and begins to contemplate existence!

I'm still undecided over Dark Star - maybe you guys will enjoy it enough to explain it all to me!

I would explain it to you, but I don't remember a single thing about it except for the fact that I'll never get back the time I wasted watching it. My friends rented it just for me. They promised me it was the funniest movie they've ever seen. I tried to laugh. I really tried.

I know what you mean, Dark Star has a split personality.

Comedy is in the eye of the beholder.
Dark Star has humorous scenes, but the overall plot raises all kinds of questions for me, none of which are funny.
