Dayton’s Bridge

Chapter One – Montana, Home (Teaser)

Dayton Dress had just walked in from his long trip home, he was tired and all he wished for was a nice warm shower, a bed, and the company of a man. Dayton was a young man, just got home from a year away at college in the New England states, he climbed the stairs of his home which he grew up in. The house was built of entirely of wood, the summer before he moved, his parents had modernized parts of the home. The floors were polished, the walls decorated with time’s hand, and the second floor landing, and second door to his left which was his old bedroom. Dayton walked in, and he felt has if he took a step back in time.

Dayton remembered his days of High School well, he looked around and remembered. On the walls were pictures of him in a red and white football uniform with the number “16” on his jersey, track and field pictures, wrestling pictures, Billings Valley High School Pride, and of coarse band posters and pictures of his life. He walked over this bed and threw his duffle onto the bed, and sat down at his desk chair in his bedroom, he put his face in his hands, and tried to forget what he had left behind in Connecticut. It was still night, he looked over and saw it was actually three am, and his parents were still sound asleep at the other side of the hall. He got up and closed his bedroom door, pulled his duffle off his bed, and laid down.

Dayton laid on his bed, and looked out the window which was right above him, in his ceiling, put there by his father when Dayton was four. Dayton loved the stars, and every night he felt as though he was sleeping under them. Travis! He shook his head, he was trying to forget. He looked around, as if trying to think of something else, but nothing came to his mind. He pulled off his shirt and pushed off his shoes, and unbuttoned his jeans and pulled them off and he laid in his white boxers. Dayton sighed, and turned on a fan which was beside his bed and allowed the cool hair blow across his body. Dayton has always been known to the girls as the “Man” cause, that’s all he was – all man.

Dayton was a successful womanizer, and his perfect pecks, abs, arms, legs, and loins, were just the icing on the cake. He couldn’t count how many women back in Connecticut and home in Montana, have had a piece of this man – Travis! Dayton shook his head. He pulled the covers over his shoulders and turned and fell asleep.

“Dayton, what are you saying” Asked a man in a heavy British accent.. He was handsome, glasses on, in a suit and holding a briefcase.

“I can’t do this Travis, you know that.”
“You said you were Bisexual, did you lie to me?”
“No I didn’t lie, I am just not sure.”

“Sure about what?” Travis asked putting his briefcase down.
“Look, you’re going to miss your class?”
“Oh to be bored by another class on my way to my paralegal degree, I think you come before that.”

“No I don’t.” Dayton replied.
“Why?” Travis asked.
“Cause I am not sure I want you.”

Travis took a step back, and looked at Dayton, looked down at his polished brown shoes and up at him again. “So, these last six months, me the grad student, you the undergrad its all just been for fun? Lust? All those messages, everything was it just your experimentation?”

“No,”
“Then what has it been? Because I was fooled that we had something here?”
Dayton was quiet.

“Well, I guess you're not spending the summer in Connecticut, going to go back home to Montana?”

“Yeah.” Dayton replied.

“Well then, 'bye!” Travis picked up his briefcase and walked away from Dayton.

Dayton awoke in his bed, his heart aching and his body sweating. He looked down and could think of nothing other than…Connecticut.

*(Tell me if you all like it...I got more! Peace!!!)

Chapter Two – Chocolate Donuts

Dayton sat up right in his bed, he was still breathing hard, but the cool air from the fan was cooling him off. He looked out the window and saw the light glow of white on the horizon, with still the dark blue of night haunting the upper sky. He got up and pulled on a tang top and sleeping pants and walked down into the kitchen of his house. He turned on the coffee maker, and waited. He looked around the kitchen for something to jog his mind so he didn’t think about what he’s really thinking about.

He saw a pink box on the counter and opened it and saw day old doughnuts in the box. He began to eat one with chocolate frosting, but then he remembered the day in the donut shop.

“I would like a Mocha please, medium, and a chocolate donut.” Said Dayton to the woman in a green apron and white polo shirt, he stood there and paid for his transaction.

“Look mate,” said a man in a heavy British accent. “I got the account under control, there is nothing to worry about. I will not lose this client. Yes I know, I am flying out there tonight, relax. Look I haven’t had any coffee this morning, I will talk to you later.”

The woman handed Dayton his change and Dayton moved over to the second counter and waited for his coffee to be made, while so he picked up a copy of the New York Times and read.

“Oh, I am sorry sir, we’re out of Chocolate frosted donuts.” Said the woman.
“Are you bloody serious? Alright then, just the cup of Joe then.” Travis paid and moved to the other counter by Dayton. Dayton was just finishing the front page, when he smelled the amazing cologne coming from the man in a suit, briefcase, polished shoes, and incredibly handsome.

“Medium Mocha, Fat Free Milk!” yelled a man, behind the drink bar. Dayton took his drink and went over to the drink cart and put a carry cover over his hot beverage. Dayton then looked at the donut in the white bag, and walked over and put in front of Travis.

“Here, I heard you order this, but I really shouldn’t be eating it. Its football season, and really shouldn’t eat it.”

Travis was caught off guard.

“Oh it’s okay mate, neither should I.” Said Travis with a cold shoulder.

Dayton feeling discourage, took out a piece of paper and wrote down his number and out it in the bag. Travis took his coffee and walked over to the drink cart station next to Dayton and put creamer in his coffee.
“Are you sure you don’t want this?” Dayton said with a smile.

Travis looked at him, and then it hit him that Dayton wasn’t bad looking, in fact, he was hot! Travis smiled, and looked down at the bag.
“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.” Dayton put the donut in front of him and walked out, smiling at Travis through the glass windows as he walked across the street to the University campus. Travis smiled and opened the bag and saw the donut and a piece of paper with seven digits on it.

Dayton looked down at his donut and as he swallowed he remembered that January morning in the coffee shop, and he threw down the donut in the box. He grabbed a cup from cupboard, poured himself a cup of coffee and walked from kitchen out into the front porch and sat down watching as just slight slivers of the sun was appearing on the horizon. He pulled his legs up on the chair, and began to sip his coffee. He was only out there for a few moments when he saw his older sister, Paige, walk out with a cup of coffee.

“Hello stranger!” She said with a bright smile. Paige was the all American girl, shoulder length perfect blonde hair, blue eyes, a beautiful face, and a cowgirl’s body since she worked on their farm.

“I didn’t think any one else was up.” Dayton said with a smile as he hug his sister.
“Oh please, once I smell coffee I am up, but I love ya, your coffee is pretty weak.”

“Oh, I just turn it on.”

“Yeah, this is daddy’s recipe.” She said with a smile. “So what time last night you come in, I didn’t hear you.”

“Oh, not till late.” Dayton replied drinking from his cup.

“Okay. So how’s Connecticut been? College beaten the crap out of you yet?”
If you only knew. Dayton thought. “It’s been a challenge, but good.”

“Daddy, has all your college games on TiVo, he would invite Big Joe, Stevie, and Lars over every Saturday and watch your games.”
“Really?” Dayton said blushing.

“Yeah, he said his son was “Hollywood”.” Paige said with a smile.

Dayton then looked up and watched the sun raise over the horse stables and the horizons of land. Paige looked at him, and saw a sadness in her little brothers eyes.

“Everything okay, baby?” Paige asked sipping from her cup.
“What? Baby?” Dayton asked.

“I’ve been calling you baby ever since you could understand it. Now what’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong.” Dayton lied.

“Right, and I have a horse named Princess.”
Dayton laughed.
“I know when there is something wrong in both of brothers. A girl knows!”

“More like nosy middle sister.”
“I am not nosy,” Paige said, then went on to add, “Well except that one time you bought that girl home in the fourth grade, and I saw you two kissing through the key hole!”

“You saw that?!”

“Yeah, Daddy was real proud of you after that.”

“Oh man!” Dayton moaned.

“Come on, what’s wrong?”
“Really Paige its nothing, nothing.”
“Uh huh.” Paige replied drinking from her cup. “What’s her name?”

Dayton didn’t say.
“Did some IVY League hoe cheat on you? I’ll kick her butt.”
“No.” Dayton replied.

“You know I will, remember sophomore year homecoming?”

“I am trying to forget.” Dayton replied with a grumble.
Paige smiled, “That bitch don’t toy with my little brother, but she ended up getting pregnant later on that year – feel bad for that baby.”

Dayton drank the rest of his coffee, and pulled his feet back up on the chair.
“Oh, you’re getting comfortable,” Paige drank the rest of her coffee as well, and put under her chair and looked at Dayton. “What’s wrong?”

Dayton sighed, “Connecticut is wrong.”
“Excuse me?”

“Paige, how well do you really know me?”
“What kind of question is that? You’re my brother, I use to watch mama wipe your butt when you were a babe.”

Dayton smiled, “No, I mean…how well?”
Paige narrowed her eyes, “Where you getting at?”

“Well there is something that no one knows, at least not here in Montana.”
Paige’s eyes widen. “Oh lord, You’re one of those man strippers I see in the movies! Oh man, Daddy’s going to be mad!”

Dayton rolled his eyes and gave a slight laugh.
“No, I trust you Paige, and you trust me right?”

“You know I do.”

“Secret?” Dayton asked looking right in Paige’s eyes.
“Secret.” Paige said reassuring him.

“It’s not a girl, it’s well – uh, a man.”

Paige’s eyes widened. “A man?!”

Dayton was quiet.

“Dayton, are you telling me, this entire time you were in Connecticut you have been dating men?” Paige asked with almost disgusted look on her face.

“No, just one man, and I am not sure how I feel.”

“Wait, I am sorry baby, I have to ask. Are you?”

“Bisexual, but I am not sure I am even that.”

“Have you ever had sex with a man?” Paige asked.

“Personal!” Dayton said.

“Okay, sorry baby. Umm, better keep this one from Daddy and Mama, not sure how they going to react.”

“React to what?” Said an older man in the door way walking out, Dayton and Paige looked up and saw their older brother, Brock. He looked exactly like Dayton, only eight years older.

“Brock, Hi!” Dayton smiled.
“Nothing, baby!” Paige replied.

But as Dayton sat down in chair, Paige got up to go get more coffee, and as she walked into the house, she put her cup down on the counter. She looked out the window which looked at their back farm houses.

“Jesus, help me.” She said, still trying to process what her little brother just told her.

Chapter Three – Connecticut Lawyers & Cowboys

Travis Charles Barker was walking down the halls of a building, which was his summer internship for the summer. The heals of his shoes echoed along the garnet walls, and he came to elevators and pushed the button and waited. He looked at his watch, he was only slightly early, then looked up at his reflection in the metal doors and he nearly dropped his briefcase. He turned around, but there was only a woman standing there, she gave him a worried look. Travis was wrong, the elevator doors opened and as he entered he pressed “22”, he was hoping that what he saw in the reflection was real, but that was in Montana.

“So little brother, how is law school coming?” Brock asked his little brother as they sat on a small wooden bridge over a river.
“I am not in law school yet, Brock.” Dayton said, throwing rocks into the water. “That’s two years away.”
“Ahh.” Brock said, “Yeah well, that’s why I raise horses and cows – a simple life. A cowboy’s life.” He said proudly.

Dayton looked over at his brother, incredibly handsome, strong chin, too proud for his own good.
“What’s botherin’ ya?” Brock asked.
“Oh – uh nothing.” Dayton said, “a girl.”
“Ahh, continue.”
“Well, we dated, I couldn’t go along with in, and well – here I am.”

“Couldn’t go along with it? Why?”
“Circumstances.” Dayton said, as he looked in the water. “Look its not like you where my future wife has been my girlfriend since I was nine!” Dayton snapped.

“Whoa!” Brock said, “Hold your horses, where did that come from?”
Dayton was silent.
“Come on little brother, tell me.”
“Look, mind your business.”

“Business? Don’t got one. I got a farm.”
Dayton smiled, and looked ahead at the trees and plants that lined the river between their family farm and the next one over.

“Find then, mind your farm!” Dayton said almost laughing.
“Nah, got other people to mind it for me.”

Dayton finally looked up at Brock, who had his wide, perfectly white charming smile on his face. Brocks eyes went from Dayton to the water below. Dayton raised an eyebrow.

“What?” Dayton asked.
“I didn’t say anything, little brother.” Brock replied. Brock then got up walked behind, Dayton and put his hands on Dayton’s shoulders.

“Remember the time, when you were nine, and I pushed you in that water below, and you couldn’t swim a gulp?” Brock whispered.
“Yeah.” Dayton said.

“Well, now your twenty and I am doing it!” Brock said, pushing Dayton in, however something Brock didn’t see coming was Dayton grabbing his shirt and took his older brother in with him.

“We have a new client,” Said a middle aged female lawyer as she walked into the conference room, “This client has been charge with manslaughter in the first degree. We have pictures, video, four eyewitness accounts, and evidence of the murder weapon, and a murder. Now all you have to do, is find him innocent.”
Travis sat among other law interns from all over the New England area, there were six in all, along with three regular lawyers, all fresh out of school. The woman then set up a video projection, and opened up the binder, that she had set up for the rest.

“Now the subject, who we’ll call ‘Red’, went into the Albertson’s grocery store and approached the black male on register six. Red then demanded the money from the drawer, but the black male didn’t give it to him. Now this is where things get hazy, even though there are camera’s above every register, there is no video tape of Red actually shooting the man, however, we do see the man get shot in this frame here.”

Travis didn’t notice that the others were paying close attention and writing notes down while his folder was still closed shut.

Travis laid in bed on his back naked, while white satin sheets and Dayton covered him. Dayton was already fast asleep, with one arm over his body, and Travis was lightly scratching his head.
“Our last night.” Travis whispered.
He looked down at Dayton, who was perfect in everyway, and they were celebrating their six month anniversary to each other. Dayton had made a fabulous dinner, and Travis followed up with dessert.
Dayton then moved in bed, and opened his blue eyes and looked up at Travis.
“Hi.” Dayton said.
“Hi.” Travis said.
Dayton then moved up and kissed Travis on the lips.
“I love you.” Dayton said.

“Well if American law does not interest you Mr. Barker, I would suggest going home to study, British law?” Travis was kicked out of his memory and to the board room.

“Well?” She asked.

Travis suddenly opened his folder and began to write the notes down.
“Good, now tell us Mr. Barker how do plan to find this man innocent?”

Travis looked up, he had only half heard everything from what she said, and other law students and three lawyers were looking at him.

“Try and find other evidence at the crime?” Travis said.
“All the evidence as been found?”
“What’s the report from CSI?”

“Well, you would know the report if you were following along. Daydream one more time about your boyfriend Mr. Barker, and I will kick you off this case.”

“Yes ma’am.”

To be frank, I don't think your chapters have enough substance. They all seem like segments of a chapter...cut into more chapters. I'm totally lost as where you want to take this, so an honest suggestion would be to include more story into each update.

Other than that, the story seems to have potential. You just need to hook readers with a more than a fourth of a worm.

Like I said before, it feels like waching a movie. But I agree with xterranx, you need more content, specially if you are going to wait 2 weeks between updates.
