Hi everyone, I'll try to make this as detailed as I can.

A few months ago, the boyfriend and I bought some computer parts and basically assembled a new desktop computer for me. Everything was running great, until today.

To give you some background information, I was running Bit Torrent, iTunes and Civilization IV at the time when the problem first presented. I was deleting an old folder from my computer, when it told me that another process was using something in that folder and as such, it couldn't be deleted.

So, I clicked ok and what not, but a small white outline of where the warning box was remained and did not want to go away. So, for the most part, I ignored it and went about my business.

Midway into my Civilization game, the monitor goes black and mouse turns off as I am informed that there is no input coming from the computer and the monitor goes to sleep. However, the tower is still running. As in, I can hear the fan going as well as see the motherboard light and the blue LED on the power button is still on.

So, I'm forced to hold down the power button until it turns off for real and try to restart it. Occasionally, it doesn't even restart, the tower turns on its things, but the mouse doesn't turn on and the monitor continues to say there is no input.

When the computer does turn on properly, it only lasts for about 3 - 5 minutes, before the mouse again turns off and the monitor declares there is no input coming to the monitor.

I was able to run a system restore, and even got the confirmation message that it had worked, but the system froze shortly there after, and has now continued to do this damnable mouse and monitor combo.

The system for the most part was running perfectly before this happened, although there were 2 separate "Windows Explorer has suffered an error and needs to be closed" messages, which basically led to a small restart when you clicked ok.

I've tried running the computer in safe mode, which when I get to it, gives me a bit more time but then proceeds to do the same thing again, as in the mouse and monitor.

So, to recap:

According to the computer, I have gone through one successful system restore that seems to have done nothing, as the problem continues.

So, I'm curious as to what to do next, since I can't seem to get a hold of the b/f and would like to get some opinions.

Firstly, is this a virus or some other Windows based problem that can be fixed via the registry or BIOS?

Secondly, does this sound more like a hardware problem than a software/operating system one?

Thirdly, what the hell do I do now?

Hardware. I would start with your graphics card. First, make sure it is firmly seated in it's slot. If that's not the problem, do you have one you can swap it out for to test?

Can you provide some specs on your system?
CPU:
RAM:
OS:
Graphics Card:

CPU: The CPU is an AMD Athlon II (I believe)
RAM: Don't know the exact model...But I have 1GB of RAM
OS: Windows XP
Graphics Card:I believe the graphics card is integrated with the motherboard, which is an ASUS M4A785TD-B EVO

The first thing is to determine is if it's hardware or software. If the machine will stay up long enough, or from another machine, download Puppy Linux from http://puppylinux.org . I recommend Puppy Linux because it is designed to boot from a CD or a USB drive. Download it and copy the file to whichever drive you choose. Then when your system restarts, boot from that drive. You will have effectively bypassed Windows and the hard drive and you'll be running a clean system. If you still have the same problem, it's hardware. If everything works fine, then it's a software problem.

It's the same concept as in the old days when you would boot a DOS diskette in the A: drive for the same purpose. But no one has boot disks or even A: drives any more.

Let us know what happens.

I agree this is a hardware problem. Cityboy-stl's idea of Puppy Linux is good, but I think you're going to find Puppy wont run after 3 to 5 minutes, either.

Check the fan on the AMD processor. My first guess is that the processor is overheating, which will lead to a shutdown of the motherboard. That's why you get 3 to 5 minutes while the chip heats up, then shutdown. After the chip cools down, then you can boot again for another few minutes. The processor fan may be getting clogged by dust, or maybe it's just going bad. Make sure the fan is well-seated on the chip, with adequate thermal paste. Make sure the fan is not obstructed by dust (or anything else). Make sure it spins okay when power is applied to the mobo.

If it's not the processor fan, then some other component of the motherboard may be overheating. And that probably means a new mobo.

I hope it's the fan, because fans are cheap.

Just as a side story, Mike Taylor in the UK got an actual garden worm in his laptop computer in 2009. The worm crawled in through a vent and got wrapped around the processor fan. The worm jammed the fan, shutting the computer down. It got cooked by the heat. An example of an actual worm infecting a computer!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to get the boyfriend, thank god he's a computer science major, to come by and take a look.

From the look of things, it was a software problem.

As far as I can tell, a part of the ATI Catalyst Control Center (for some reason called the MOM*****) was having trouble starting, as it kept loading and then self-terminating and loading again.

So, after a quick Windows reinstall (after the computer for some reason decided to stop shutting itself down and allow me to actually do some things on it), I have uninstalled the CCC and the system seems to be working fine.

However, while attempting to play Civilization, the game and system froze and I had to forcibly restart the computer. So, I think I have to reinstall the CCC in order to actually play games on the desktop.

So, does anyone know why this MOM***** would do something like this, and how I can avoid this happening again after I've reinstalled it?

that is a bit weird because the catalyst driver shouldn't be loaded in safe mode where you machine crashed as well.
anyway .. please patch your civ4 and download the latest ati drivers as there have been several issues with current games and wrongly optimized drivers that caused the GPU to overheat.

I wish JUB's filter wouldn't block out that stuff because this kind of thing might be needed if someone else was to run across this problem.

I agree. I find that annoying.

There is probably a very good reason why - preventing people clicking on links to potentially harmful executables in this case.

Maybe it's because I don't use Windows, but I have never seen a browser resolve a Windows executable file name back to the operating system for execution. I did not even know that was possible.

no, not even windows does this. but we have had spammers spam links to <somerandomshit.>exe files with great promises about the content (nude hung twinks!) for some time. and as you know people will click anything.

But with the filter blocking out the name of the file I had to CLICK the link so I could find out the full name of the file. I think maybe a better way is to take a screen capture of the file names and paste them so people don't have to click some random link.
