So, I am planning to buy a new MP3 player. In the past, I have gotten the cheap 2GB players and they have broken for a number of reasons, or they were just buggy (although the creative zen v was perfect). I am now ready to buy one of the big boys - either the iPod Touch or the Zune 2 80GB

The problem is which one. I mean both has they great sides. Despite what people will say, the Zune is a solid player with a lot of very good features, and 80 GB. VERSUS the 8 GB of the iPod touch. But the iPod Touch has internet connection ANYWHERE! and it is free. So its like, what do I do. I mean 8GB isnt a lot, but I was content with 2GB so it isnt a problem.

Both has pictures, video, music of course, and their own special features.

SOOOOOO which one?

I am familiar with iPods, so I would want an iPod Touch. I do want one, actually. If you need large capacity the Zunes apparently your best option. Note that the Touch doesn't have Internet access everywhere, it is anywhere that there is a compatible wireless network (PC not phone) available. I think this is still a great feature with this limitation. Pretty much anywhere I am where I'd want to use the Internet capabilities there would be an open or accessible access point (coffee shop, work, friend's house, my house).

Yeah, I want an iPod Touch.

What do you think?

so the ithing uses free wireless internet points? like wifi i guess? you don't have to pay for it some how? i think i'd take that over the 80 gb then. do these ithings have any options for expandability down the road? i mean if a 20 gb one comes out can you just plug in an attachment to get extra storage?

Yeah, it uses Wi-Fi only. One of the downsides is the smaller storage capacity, which most, not all, are fine with. It's set up to access iTunes through the connection, too.

Alas, I don't think it's storage is expandable, at least not for laymen, but it's flash, not a mechanical hard drive--a definite plus for power saving, durability, and faster data access.

I've read a lot of reports/blogs about the Zune WiFi and most agree that it will be only a matter of time before someone figures out a hack to get internet access or else Microsoft will provide a free upgrade in the near future to enable Internet access through the Zune's WiFi capability.

I suppose it depends on what you're looking for overall.

Personally I've never needed internet access just walking down the street or sitting in a cafe so the iPod doesn't grab me on that one, and I never 'buy' music online, and I wouldn't want to ever install iTunes ever.

IMO yes you can get over the 8gig storage (or 16gig) but once you have your movies lined up and your albums etc. then you discover that your selection is severely limited because of capacity.

Plus the Zune has an FM radio and that for me is a killer app - I always find myself switching on the radio to hear the news or to catch a drive time show.
good points. but i would love the internet on my phone. i like pandora.com radio and i can access it through the iTouch. also, you can develop third party apps for the iTouch so I am sure there is a radio app out there.

you make good points for the Zune. I just need to get my hands on one, and i'll know which one i want.

I'm back! You referred to the Touch as a phone, remember that it isn't! It's the poor man's iPhone--no phone.

I tested out the iPhone and assuming the web browsing experience is the same for the Touch, it is the best mobile web experience out there. The interface is very intuitive and just plain fun to work with. It's too bad it only has 8 - 16 GB storage. For me that's not an issue. I have a media PC at home and only load what I'm likely to watch or listen to. I'm just accustomed to that.

I didn't mean to call it a phone.

8 GB does not really affect me. I am sure down the line I will want more, but I will rarely put many videos on the thing, and picture files are very small. It would be better to get the 16GB though. More room, blah blah but Idk if I can really afford it.

Still, I have been thinking about it. Zune sounds very attractive. In the long run, it will last longer most likely. That is my thinking at least. Who knows, I might just get a nano.
