I was typing then in my face was a box to 'update' Adbobe Reader. thinking it was part of something I already had and needed to update I went through all the stuff of updating which also included 'install'. Now I have an extra programm on my desktop, but i don't know if I NEED it? does anyone here use it? wtf's it for? and should I uninstall it? :help:

Adobe is necessary for PDF files which you often run into on the internet. You've probably used it and not even noticed what it was.

Like gsdx said, you're unlikely to get very far on the IntarWeb these days if you don't have some method of reading PDFs (you won't be able to read the JUB magazine online, for instance). Adobe reader is the default option on both win and mac, so yes, you do need it.

I recently updated Adobe Reader, and now I find the new one a lot slower than the previous version.

Adobe reader is FREE!! As was mentioned, a PDF reader is needed for many docs off the internet. If u have not used it, and plan not to view or print PDF's then it is your call to delete it!

I agree with Noelie..........I do use Adobe Reader but the extra crap is a pain in the ass.

Adobe Reader is utter shite; Foxit is much faster and far less bug-ridden.

FoxIt Reader all the way. You'll never turn back. On Macs, you already have Preview.

The latest versions install loads of crap and startup apps, updaters etc. IMO Adobe Reader has become a serious piece of bloatware and that's why I use FoxIt Reader (free).

i agree with you 100%. it seems like each successive version has gotten slower and slower and takes up more and more resources!

i also use the foxit thing. i mean really anything with "fox" in the name has to be cool right? ;)

FoxIt Reader has gone commercial as well.

The Adobe one isn't that bad if you follow the tutorials to remove all the plugins from loading at the start. That way a PDF pops up in one or two seconds.

out of interest I just looked and found the mac preview application installed is half the size of the acrobat download file. I increasingly find software "updates" to be bigger, slower and harder to use than the original. When I am told an update is available I read very carefully what the improvements are and if they are not relevant to my use of the software I turn them down. I also use version Tracker to get earlier less bloated versions.

I'd like to get rid of Adobe Reader and when I've tryed using the add/remove I get the following message. That if you remove it other programs may be affected. Is there any truth to this? If so. What would be affected by remoiving it?
Thanks In Advance.

the only thing that you should lose is the ability to open pdf files - in a browser or any other application. it should be safe to uninstall it.
you can always install some kind of free pdf reader if you just want to open PDFs. although some of the more advanced PDF features may not work in them - so if you do have the original adobe acrobat reader it is most important that you also update this one, because much malware is using this (and flash) now to gain access to your system.
