Do straight men watch the Mary Tyler Moore Show?

I don't see what sexual preference has to do with it.

I won't go into the details, but I've been wondering this for a while.

What kind of man watches that kind of show? Can you watch that show and still be straight?

Any answers are welcome. Please and thank you. :)

Suggest you find a st8 site and pose the question there - I dare say that str8 men may find her a littl too long in the tooth now but who am I to judge? I prefer the male flesh in True Blood! ;)

It was a great show during its first run in the 1970s, and it's still a great show in syndication now. Doesn't matter whether you're gay, straight or trisexual ... funny is funny.

Agreed that is was a great show and is still funny (and sometimes the uber-70s setting makes it even funnier).

That said, I'm not sure how many straight guys would sit around watching a MTM marathon the way they would watch a South Park or FG marathon, example. For one thing, a lot of the humor turns around "girly stuff" about relationships and (when Valerie Harper was on) weight, clothes, etc. The workplace stuff was more universal, but most sitcoms - like most TV except sports, science shows, and sci-fi - skew to female viewership nowadays. I'm sure plenty of straight men watch MTM reruns from time to time, but if the original question is: "would a straight guy be a fanatical MTM fan," I think the answer is maybe, but probably not. It's just ... not a typically straight-guy thing to do.

Edited to add: Another problem with the MTM show for men is that are no strong male characters on the show, other than Lou Grant, who may not be the kind of man a lot of guys want to identify with. It really was sort of an early female-empowerment show, and that's not going to have a lot of appeal to men.

^ Yes, and it's been a little ritual of mine to do mini-marathons on Sunday nights (I don't know why I chose Sunday).

I should have known I was gay when I used to fantasize about living in her apartment (the first one).

Thanks Mike. My friend at work has the first season on DVD - got it as a gift sometime back. I watched the first episode. I can see why it was popular. Likable. And Cloris Leachman is just great.

Must continue.

By the by, I live in Australia so Hulu is not available... as I reminded every time I try to access the site!!

I never watched it all the way through. It was one of those shows where the star (Mary) was the straight man for all of the other characters. Tedious.

oh okay, the theme song just started and i remember seeing this on nick at nite in 93 when i couldn't sleep at because my mother was in the hospital dieing.
