Tried to set up an appointment at a family doctor, but I'm not registered with them. They said they are not accepting new patients at this time and to wait a month. Is this common within North America? Is there really a shortage of doctors everywhere?

Sounds typical. If you don't have a regular doctor, you will wait. This is why emergency rooms are flooded with people and emergency room service is the most expensive treatment there is. Unfortunately we choose to educate more LAWYERS than doctors to a point where lawyers are a dime a dozen and doctors are scarce. It's easier to get sued than it is to see a doctor!

As versa39 said, welcome to our version of socialized medicine. I hope you're not terribly sick. If so, you may need to go to a hospital emergency room or clinic.

This topic is exactly why imediate care facilities are poping up all over and doing well. It is always good to find a doctor you like when you are not sick, set up the initial appointment for a yearly physical, then you are established when you need medical help.. Just some advice.:-)

It's a problem with my left ear. I can hear a strange noise in it every time something touches the ear as if it's more sensitive now although my hearing has not seemed to have been affected. I'm hoping it's not a ruptured eardrum, but I would like to get it looked at before I try to do anything such as clean it with one of those syringe type things.

dear ragater,
I am in the US not Canada, and sorry you could not get a doctor appt at home. BUT with your description of your problem, definitely have a doctor look in the ear canal before putting anything in it yourself (including a douche). go to the ER if this is what you need to do in Toronto. It is not likely a ruptured eardrum; more likely a foreign body (wax etc) or an external ear infection.

I guess I could try the ER, but I thought they'd be more strict as to what types of conditions would be permissible and I might get turned away although I guess there's no harm in trying.

ER won't turn you away for sure. You may wait a LONG time is all. People go to the ER for a lot less I assure you. However, if you are paying out of pocket, it is considerably more expensive I believe.

Just find a walk-in clinic. You'll probably have to wait for a bit, but you'll get to see someone the same day.

Call some other doctors and/or ask friends for referrals to their doctor.

And as others have said, go see a "doc in the box" the little walk in clinics. Many stay open late and on weekends. Much less expensive than an ER visit.

Yes, a lot are. Nurse practitioners may be another option for you to consider.
