There's no such thing as a self-driving car. What Tesla offers is enhanced cruise control.

I am aware of at least one fatality in the area, when a car on autopilot failed to recognize that a truck had pulled across the road and had stopped. It had kept on going and hit the truck at full speed.

What is even the point of this technology? Are pilotless planes next? We might as well employ visually impaired people as uber drivers just for show. Then, no one will know they're in a driverless car and the blind can get work.

Or is it all about "we'll do this because we can, not necessarily because we should."

Is it just the cool factor? Swallowing Tide pods was cool once.

There must be a sort of inside industry push to continue development of driverless technology. What the general public wants doesn't seem to matter.

Zoox just launched in Las Vegas and this type of robotaxi has no steering wheel or controls.

I'm going to Las Vegas next month. Apparently ZOOX is free. I'll try it, but for an actual trip, not just a spin around Resorts World, please. Could it take me to the Strat?

Actually, I think it's free because it follows two fixed round trip routes, but that could just be for day one.
Make it free for selected destinations for a more serious shake-out (in my opinion). (y) (y)

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London is driverless. That's disconcerting enough for me.

It's a good few years since I rode the DLR but they used to have an attendant standing at the front of the train to reassure the passengers. Of course the worst that could happen on a closed train system like DLR is that it misses a stop
