Doritos Superbowl Commercial

Another stereotype of portraying gays in the media is: they're all in-shape guys. Maybe they should replace those two actors by the pool with 2 overweight harry guys. Would that make it better?

Okay, I am really over this trend of people getting upset when gay characters "act gay" on TV. The two gay men in this small clip still strike me and nice, sociable neighbors. If you're this angry at them for being stereotypical, what even makes you better than the heterosexuals that would make fun of them in real life?

"Nothing except stereotypes," my ass. It's a 30-second clip. I'm not exactly looking for a gripping backstory on every fucking character. Commercials at large are full of characters that are conjured up by simple stereotypes: the smart wife leading the stupid husband, the young single straight guy looking for women, the protective mom.

And hey, imagine now the gays next door could probably have a place in that. God fucking forbid. I'm beyond over the self-hate in the LBGT community.

Well said!

Stereotypes exist because there are real people who fit them. When you want to portray a certain group of people in just a few seconds, what do you use? A stereotype. It's not insulting, it's a means of efficient communication.

Besides that, people have to get comfortable with the stereotype, quite often, before they'll open their eyes to see the variety.

Seriously!

A question for people who are outraged specifically by the stereotypes present in the gay men in this clip. Do you have any friends who fit those stereotypes? Do you feel comfortable telling them that you're disgusted by the presence of guys "like them" on television?

I have gay friends and acquaintances across the spectrum of masculinity and femininity. Every single one of them are good, beautiful people and are members of the LGBT community worthy of being represented. Some of the shit I'm reading here is downright depressing.
You should read it more often: it might make you more jaded, but stronger and less prone to quitting discussions with the mindless, and therefore more immune and willing to stand for what is right against people who are too block-headed to ever get really depressed.

Get a grip, it's a 30 second commercial.

I don't think you need to put on blackface when the way black people get stereotyped at this point are as 'thugs' and it does happen plenty of times.

The problem is that they do THAT stereotyping to themselves. The commercial is funny, at least, even if the humor is dated...
