The master of the double entendre was Kenneth Williams whose best work was on the radio. He was a very obvious homosexual when, before 1967, such things were still illegal and unmentionable.

He only got away with so much because the compere of the show, Kenneth Horne, was so conventional, so ultra straight, that millions of people listened to show, which was extremely popular, without any idea about the true meaning of some of the humour.
