Well No one bit on buying a computer with Linux on it. As I figured they wouldn't, but I am stuck with XP on a computer and no drivers.

So here I am to ask exactly how I should go about getting the drivers? And when I download them off of the manufacters website, do I just put the install program on a CD and put it into XP? What exactly does the modem look like in the computer?

Ok, so what I did. I took the ethernet card out of my other old ass computer and put it in the new one I am trying to sell. I hope it works.

So new question. How much power does a computer need to be a server PC?

I think i can answer the first post. I've never used a server so i can't answer the second post.

If you have identified all the hard ware on your computer you can go to each manufacturer's web site and download what will likely be just an *.exe file to your hard drive and then double click on it to run. you can burn them to CD so that who ever you sell the computer to has then on a cd.

If you don't have all the hardware identified, you can try downloading the free BelArc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

after you download it, install it. it will run and after a few seconds give you a page you can print out of all the hardware in your computer (hopefully). then anything that isn't working well you can look for the driver for it. you should download and install the drivers for your motherboard first thing after getting the report.

Ok, well the ethernet card I put in worked, and I can get it to recognize the internet. Anyway, I can still do this straight from the computer? And the computer originally came with Vista Basic, so will all the drivers still work.

And where the fuck do I go in XP to get the computer to scan my computer for hardware and such?

as for the server computer. the computer isssss a HP Pavillion 7915 desktop. 1.1 ghz processor
128MB SDRAM
40GB Ultra DMA Harddrive
CD-Rom

damn that computer is pathetic. how did i ever use it?

I wanted to make it a server PC to sell to someone. But after going over those specs as I wrote them here, I think that would be close to impossible.

Oh, and did you ever get the files I put into our shared foldr? :p

Well, go ahead and upload a [strike]porn[/strike] movie. As long as it is small. Cause I have used up 64% of space.

I suspect you won't be offered a lot of money for that computer.

A suggestion: Add a second ethernet card to the box and install Smoothwall Express on it (free). Put it between your home network and your internet connection as a (very secure and extremely configurable) firewall for your home network.

If you want to use it as a file server on a network, Puppy Linux will probably work.Puppy or Xubuntu would also make a great "internet appliance" for surfing, email, office applications, playing mp3s, movies, etc.

Sorry Mikey but Belarc can't identify hardware that doesn't have the drivers installed (I'm pretty sure of that) (*8*)...

are you sure? i thought i just downloaded mobo drivers for my mom's new computer by using belarc to identify what it was without taking the whole thing apart. windows had just used generic drivers for things like the onboard video card, sound card and stuff. can't hurt to try. you might be right though noelie, if so, sorry for the bum advice. !oops!
