Driving Mistakes or someone trying to qualify for the current Darwin Awards

It might not have been a mistake at all; it looks like the car's tires just lost traction on the road and he started sliding.

That happened to me once. I was driving a rental car on a French autoroute in a very hilly area, and the general traffic speed, even in the right lane, required that I drive faster than I was comfortable doing. The treads on the tires must not have been good, because every so often the car just started sliding forward in a way that was just like hydroplaning, except that the road was dry. Eventually, I was in the left lane (fewer cars there), the tires lost traction completely, and despite my attempts to pump the brakes, the car spun out across two other lanes and onto the shoulder. It was a miracle that I didn't hit any other cars or a guard rail and that there happened to be a wide shoulder at that point in the road instead of the outcroppings of granite there were elsewhere.

And that was the reason I finally learned the French word for tire (pneu, as in pneumatique).

I took slow local roads to drive back to Lyon airport when it was time to return the car and fly home.

That guy is hauling ass, carrying the mail as we used to say. He sees the traffic stop and panics like a bitch. I worked highway patrol just like this trooper, people think they can drive and guess what? They can't. The trooper is lucky he made it, and he went right back to work too.

Maybe that's just how French cars handle?

Unlikely, since all the other French cars on the road were handling just fine, and they were going faster than I was.
