dry sockets?

hey guys!

I'm on day 3 post-wisdom teeth extraction. i was having a shake earlier, and it would sting/hurt when the liquid would touch the area where the teeth were pulled. does that mean that the clot had fallen out? i've been super careful the last 3 days. i'd hate to think a socket had formed after all.

i can't do a self examination quite yet since my jaws are still sore and can't quite open my mouth wide enough.

advice is much appreciated

Dude it sucks big time. I had all 4 of mine extracted in May. Luckily I didn't get dry sockets. I used a lot of salt water and just leaned my head from side to side. Did you get the dissolving stitches? If so its gonna feel funny the they dissolve, but I have to say it was worth it because mine caused me to have a lot of headaches. Best of luck to you.

Just keep following your oral surgeon's or dentist's advice. There's going to be pain for a while and that doesn't necessarily mean you have a dry socket. Even if you do have a one though, there's not a whole lot you can do about it on your own before the follow up appointment (which should be in a couple days I'm guessing).

funny you mentioned the follow-up, there wasn't any mention of that so far, LOL. I think a bit of an oversight on my part, although they did say that I could call anytime I had questions. and my temporary crown also got dislodged the other day, so i gotta call about that situation too, LOL.

It seems unusual to me that they didn't schedule a check-up a week after the initial surgery. The reason for the follow up is to make sure everything is healing properly, specifically to check for problems like dry sockets or infection.

i just got back from the check-up, doc says i'm healing well, no dry sockets (since i'm not in unmitigating pain during the waking hours) and i can eat solids again. he told me to come back in a month.

i actually *almost* asked that!! LOL. he mentioned that the bone will grow in around 6 weeks, so, probably that's the time i can get some action again. (good thing i got some before the surgery, LOL)

I had one of mine pulled yesterday---and I feel totally fine so far----had a bit of bleeding right after the procedure and so far no problems and no real pain. The dentist did not schedule a follow-up....so I guess if I have problems I will need to call him up. I was expecting a lot more discomfort-----kidney stones were worse.

At one point in my life I worked for a dentist, and we did do some wisdom teeth extractions in our office. A little pain and discomfort is normal, and even a little stinging and hurting when eating/drinking seems normal too. A dry socket is very painful, and more than a short pain too. You'd probably be hurrying yourself into the dentist very fast if you really had a dry socket.

Sounds like you've already been checked out by your dentist - I'd just avoid crunchy hard foods - stick to a softer diet, and warm very gentle salt water rinses aren't a bad idea either.
