Emule is a file transferring software. It connects to FTP servers and you are able to download files
it does NOT connect to ftp servers. it connects to other users running emule as well - it is a so called P2P application
Is it worth it. I have been told it takes forever for a download to start...I don't have it yet, but I would like some insight into this program.

when i still used it, the start of the download heavily depended a) on the popularity of the file b) on the server that you were using. however, imho emules days are long counted. because of a) way too many fakes and corrupt files b) RIAA ànd all are lately targeting emule users a lot. the only great plus that remains is the search function ;)

have tried many, emule is the best for me, you should know that it works like a waiting list, so you need to allow emule to stay connected some hours (hours?? yes at least for the very first time, but after that, it becomes a piece of cake).

Just remember that downloading files which aren't free or that you didn't buy is illegal.

That's not true in all cases. It's only true with copyrighted material.

If i were you, i'd go with torrents like noelie pointed out. Much faster than eMule. But eMule isn't a security risk by any means. Users only have access to your files if you configure eMule to act that way, and only then they can only download what's in your eMule download folder. But still, torrents are generally safer and faster.

By "aren't free" I meant copyrighted, commercial files which you don't have the permission to download.

If you download a Freeware or Open Source program with eMule, it's ok.

You also have to remember there are tons of videos out there that people Download, and many of those are not copyrighted as well ;)

I don't use it anymore but when I did found it useful for finding obscure files rather than what everyone else was downloading, like current films, which inevitably turn out to be fake.

It has a prioritizing algorithm that takes into account the amount of sharing that you do, so as you build up "credit" the downloading becomes faster.

The bandwidth throttle never worked for me and after several hours I often had to reset my adsl modem and router.

There is a linux version, aMule, but you can get eMule to work with wine.
