this is a great option as a cheap ultra portable laptop its basically all i want i dont need the power of a full laptop when out and the extra weight of a full laptop makes it difficult to carry everywhere

i believe it has an sd card slot for expansion and usb which is great to upgrade the memory for quite a cheap price and it is really cheap like $200-$450 us depending on the spec

I heard about this some time ago and have been following this machine. The cheapest I've seen it advertised is $400, however, and that is with only a 4 GB hard drive, a 7 in. screen with just 800 x 400 resolution, 512 MB RAM, and an Intel Mobile processor of unspecified speed. And it comes with Linux, but if you want Windows, you have to pay extra.

Compare that to the Acer Aspire 3680=2682, which you can get at Micro Center for just $380. The Acer comes with an 80 GB hard drive, a 14.1 in. screen with 1280x800 resolution, 512 MB RAM, and an Intel Celeron M processor running at 1.86 GHz. And the Acer includes Vista Home Basic and a DVD/CDRW drive at that price.

So the ASUS looks expensive by comparison. To be fair, prices may fall once the computer actually becomes available. But right now, it looks like the ASUS will cost quite a bit more than low end laptops which are quite a bit more powerful.

which are quite a bit larger and heavier and more fragile due to there Moving parts

if you compare it directly with a laptop of the same price of course it will lose but it is like comparing a disc man to a mp3 player

its all about the size i dont want to lug around a big heavy laptop everywhere i go when i can have something that does all that i want at 1/3 the weight and much smaller and more rugged

also umpc's usually start at $1000

well it can run xp so i assume it could run any linux distro you would just have to figure out how to install it from a flash drive you should be able to dual boot the existing OS with Ubuntu ..|

I'd rather get a regular second-hand laptop.

i haven't seen this particular one, but i have seen a few laptops w/ solid state hard drives at work. the hard drives are read like ordinary usb thumb drives.

You can use an external CD/DVD ROM drive off the USB ports from what I read.
What I'd be curious to know is how the OS sees the solid state hdd - does it appear/present itself to be like a normal hdd?

We're still waiting to hear about your new Nokia lad ;)

its a sony :slap:

got a black one :D i was going to get the linux one but they only had black and there were selling about the same as the xp one so xp it is $399 4gb on board and a free 4gb sd hc card and mouse and case as shown in the pics below

ill grab some more ram for it later and it will be even more awesome ..|

the web cam definatly works;)

Glad you got one AJ. I am more than happy with mine, have also run puppee on it with no probs. It does run sdhc with no problems and can boot from an external dc/dvd drive. If you plug a monitor into its vga port and select full desktop it behaves like a full size pc. I tried the logitech wireless dongle and revolution mouse and it worked with no driver install. It wirelessly networks with my Mac and laptop PC, connects to the wireless network that my N95 can create and is overall a great piece of kit and worth every penny. The best thing is its size, it really is truly portable in the way that normal laptops just aren't.

So there was a quick review from a happy customer.

it would be pretty much peerfect for that sort of thing you do have to play with some of the settings a bit and programs llike in ff everything is really big but if you get rid of all but the nav bar and change to a small theme like Simple Green which is small then it all works good

also you must hide the task bar it takes up valuable real estate

its also a great finger warmer on cold days ;)

going through and having a look what i can uninstall there is only 200 mb left on the main drive 4gb on the sd still though

I like the concept, but think it could be further developed. It is great for simple mobile computing, and if it fits your need why not go for it. I just wish the screen was a little bit bigger.

well there is a 9 inch and 10 inch models avaliable for a bit more
