Driver excused from driving bus with gay-themed ad

By H.J. Cummins
McClatchy Newspapers
(MCT)
MINNEAPOLIS - A city bus driver who complained about a gay-themed ad got official permission not to drive any bus that carries that ad, according to an internal memo confirmed Tuesday by Metro Transit.
Transit authorities call it a reasonable accommodation to the driver's religious beliefs.
Amalgamated Transit Unit Local 1005 officials at the bus company say it condones intolerance; besides, drivers never have been excused from other buses carrying ads they found objectionable - from political candidates to pink bras.
Requests for religion-based considerations are increasingly in the news, as workplace observers say more Americans bring their faiths to their jobs. A bank in Otsego, Minn., declares itself to be a Christian bank, for example. Some pharmacists want the right to refuse to fill contraceptive prescriptions.
Also, many Muslim taxi drivers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport refuse to accept passengers who are carrying alcohol.

You know what, though?

It just makes the Christians look stupider and more paranoid and weirder.

It'll turn the normal, everyday humans with control of their brains against them even more.

the more dumb-ass things that Christians do, the more power they lose.

OK, I agree, that homophobe of a driver probably has problems with himself and it IS a stupid objection not to drive a certain bus just because some gay-themed add... but he is afterall entitled to his own opinion, and if he genuinely feels uncomfortable driving around like that I agree that he should be given the option to choose a diferent bus to drive. Think of it this way... would you go on and drive a bus that had a distinctly anti-gay add on it???

Apples and oranges.

I wouldn't have a problem driving a bus with a Pro-Christian one.

and I'd probably not think an anti-Christian one would be appropriate.

i think we've become far too much tolerant against any religious excuses. religion is a private matter and if you have a public job and you feel you can't fulfill some parts of your job because of religious beliefs or any other reason.. go and find another job! :grrr:

hell yeah :gogirl:

umm who cares about the bus driver.. there will always be someone else to drive the bus... i don't think its right that a muslim wants to refuse driving an drunk person because the muslim isn;t the one drinking and i can't see how helping someone in need would be bad for their religous beliefs... and no pharmacist should be able to refuse a perscription..

UPDATE! Better late than never?!

Metro Transit changes mind on driver, gay-themed ads

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - Metro Transit said Friday that it inadvertently sent the wrong message about tolerance in trying to accommodate a bus driver's religious objections to driving buses that carried gay-themed ads.
Metro Transit spokesman Bob Gibbons said the company made a temporary accommodation to the driver on Oct. 12, allowing her not drive buses that carried an ad for Lavender, a local magazine aimed at the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.
The ad showed the face of a young man with the slogan, "Unleash Your Inner Gay." Fifty buses carried it periodically.
The ad contract ran only through Oct. 18, Gibbons said, and buses no longer are carrying the ads.
However, in reviewing the issue, Gibbons said the company likely would not make the same decision again.
"We are not persuaded that advertising, per se, infringes on religious practices and would be reluctant to make similar accommodations in the future," Gibbons said.
The woman is still driving for Metro Transit, he added.
Metro Transit had come under fire from a union leader and some other drivers, who said the company was condoning intolerance.
"We deeply regret any impressions of intolerance," Gibbons said in a written statement. "Metro Transit employs and serves a diverse population, and we do our best to be respectful of all views."
The bus controversy followed news of many Muslim taxi drivers serving the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport refusing to accept passengers carrying alcohol and some pharmacists across the country insisting on the right to refuse to fill contraceptive prescriptions.

It's a good thing they came to their senses.

It's one thing to accommodate someone's religious beliefs by allowing them to do something their religion prescribes (wearing a veil, for example).

It's something else to accommodate someone's intolerance of other religions/beliefs (homosexuality) by allowing them to refuse to serve them.

Add to this a request by Muslim taxi drivers in Minnespolis who have requested the City Council to change local laws to permit them to refuse passengers who have consumed alcohol because the consumption of alcohol is against their religious beliefs.

Just how much accommodation must be made for religious beliefs?????

Sieg Heil my friend. And while we are at it, why don't we just shoot that bus driver too because their religious beliefs egregiously inconvenience American consumers.

Unfortunately, you cannot brush aside constitutional protections on religious beliefs as you fight for constitutional protections for gay rights... human rights and constitutional protections are two way streets. This is a free country. Just as you have the right to fuck anyone you want, people also have the right to believe anything they want and have legal protections for those beliefs... no matter how repugnant.

The simple solution to both matters is to find taxi drivers who don't mind alcohol consumption or bus drivers who don't mind hauling around gay ads. This is a nation of reason, and so those are your reasonable solutions.

Oden, I dont' agreee..

quelle suprise.

If, let's say... a bus driver refused to drive a bus that had a political ad for a black candidate, and a white driver refused to drive it because he didn't want to drive the "Nigger mobile", we would all be appalled... and rightfully so.

I'm not seeing how this is any difference.

Freedom of religion should only go so far... and that's as far as your own doorstep.. no further.

Everyone's religious and all other beliefs should be respected. Their freedom of thought and expression is constitutionally protected. All that is fine and nice.

When it comes to work, you do what is within the law and not what suits or does not suit your personal attitudes.

So, yeah, I like gay guys much more than I do str8 dudes. Good for me. But when it comes to work, everyone gets equal treatment. Period.

I think that every case have to be analyzed individually, because the respect to the believes of others is one of the foundation for peace and tolerance, although we have become way to paranoid trying to pleases everyone.

It was in the news this week that a school in Switzerland was planning to prohibit the use of T-Shirts which carry the Swiss national flag on it. Guess why? There is a cross on the flag, so foreign pupils might take it as an act of provocation. For God sake it is their flag, if you are offended by it don’t go to Switzerland.

Great analogy!! ..|

The situation was a person carrying alcohol or having consumed alcohol. Being drunk would carry the additional burden of having to hose out the cab ;)

Seriously, what a fucking dickhead. I hope he does not mind watching all those faggot produced tv shows and movies.

Man if I was a waiter I would take much pleasure spitting in his taco.
