Elaine Stritch RIP

My god, what a talent she was. She was like a lightning strike on stage. Electricity just buzzed from her magnetic personality and wonderfully rare talent. Thank you, Elaine. I had a great time.

R.I.P Elaine Stritch

Elaine Stritch, the brassy, tart-tongued Broadway actress and singer who became a living emblem of show business durability and perhaps the leading interpreter of Stephen Sondheim’s wryly acrid musings on aging, died on Thursday at her home in Birmingham, Mich. She was 89.

Her death was confirmed by a friend, Julie Keyes. Before Ms. Stritch moved to Birmingham last year, she lived for many years at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan.

Ms. Stritch’s career began in the 1940s and spanned almost 70 years. She made her fair share of appearances in movies, including Woody Allen’s “September” (1987) and “Small Time Crooks” (2000), and on television; well into her 80s, she had a recurring role on the NBC comedy “30 Rock” as the domineering mother of the television executive played by Alec Baldwin.Elaine Stritch, the brassy, tart-tongued Broadway actress and singer who became a living emblem of show business durability and perhaps the leading interpreter of Stephen Sondheim’s wryly acrid musings on aging, died on Thursday at her home in Birmingham, Mich. Re: R.I.P Elaine Stritch

I saw Elaine Strich live in "Show Boat," in Toronto, in the 1990s.

She was a great stage actress and versatile.

May she rest in peace.

I am so sad to hear this tonight. They don't them like her anymore. :(

It seems she can't carry a tune. Was she ever able to? Or is it just the source of the material (Sondheim)?

Apologies. I had little idea of who she was. Hal Prince said she had a "personality voice"--a great description. I found this NY Times video in which she talks about her life to be both fascinating and deeply moving:
