EMMY nominations

^I never got the big deal about Lost. I watched season one and had no desire to move on to season two.

And Supernatural...I think the writing's actually pretty bad. The figurative demons you speak of are obvious, two dimensional, and hackneyed. The plotlines themselves are utterly ridiculous, and this is coming from someone who really LIKES sci-fi/fantasy type shows. It'd be one thing if the show knew it was typically ridiculous and went with it, like Buffy or Doctor Who, but it just takes itself so SERIOUSLY, unless it's a one-off "special" episode.

They are not at all two dimensional. They're incredibly complex and perfectly reasonable given the willful suspension of disbelief required with any sci-fi. And I don't see where you would ever say it takes itself so seriously it doesn't take itself seriously at all. It's peppered with humor in every episode and the characters make a point to not be emotional or sensitive considering the overall machoness of the dynamic. But the reality of the situation si they deal with things so emotionally charged they can't ignore them as they wish to and are forced to address them if only in brief spurts. And how you say plots are ridiculous I really need more clarification considering, as I said, the willful suspension of disbelief one needs with sci-fi what makes a plot line "ridiculous" in your opinion.
 
With willful suspension of disbelief, it's ridiculous. The bastardized mythology is ridiculous (borrowing from five hundred different sources and, when the actual mythos of whatever ghoulie or ghostie or long-leggety beastie they're dealing with doesn't fit the mold, they just re-write the whole thing). The "ooh i am so macho" stoicism is ridiculous. The funniest moments are not written to be funny- that's really my biggest thing with the show. When a moment that's supposed to be emotionally charged and intense makes me laugh so hard I cry, the show is officially lumped into the "ridiculous" category. This can be seen from the very first episode. When the girlfriend was on the ceiling on fire, I was falling over laughing because it just looked so stupid.

Oh, and nothing is funnier than Jared Padelecki's angry face. Nothing.


Just a side note: I don't want to seem like I'm attacking you or your taste in television. I'm only attacking the show you watch :-)
 
No Wire, no BSG and no Friday Night Lights. Very disappointing indeed.

What's the appeal with House after this long? They dont nominate CSI (superior show) so why this?

The bastardization of mythology... as apposed to Buffy which followed lore to a T???? I mean in my mind that's quite a silly reason to hate a show all sci-fi shows which aren't set in space are a creolization of myths and lores or they become stale repetitive remakes of what's been seen time and time again. The show takes great pains to be accurate to the subject matter but when you're setting things that were crafted in a time long before electricity of course there's going to be modern updates and modifications.

I don't know the moments you refer to when you say emotional moments come off as funny. I think Jensen in particular has done a wonderful job pulling off some truly difficult scenes. What comes to mind off the top of my head is Dean's monologue to Sam in "All Hell Breaks Loose part. 2" and when he kicked the shit out of his car at the end of "Everybody Loves A Clown"

As far as the macho stoicism being "ridiculous"... it's just realism. I don't know if you have siblings but me and my brother don't sit around and pine about emotions we are much more likely to call each other "bitch" or "jerk" and move on full well knowing we meant what we didn't say. Dean's use of comedy to deflect emotions gives the writers wonderful opportunity to use both emotion and humor when dealing with the character adn they use it to its fullest.

At the end of the day I know it's not Schindler's List. I personally think House should win best drama and Hugh Laurie should take best actor. But when I see crap like Grey's Anatomy which is so much of a soap opera they might as well give it a daytime Emmy I think it's bunch. I understand why Supernatural is overlooked and even if it wasn't recognized for anything I'd get it but I do think it should at least get some consideration and stop being treated like a show for teens just because it's on the CW. It's got much more depth than freaking one tree hill.

To me, the best writing on The CW in recent history is usually from 'Everybody Hates Chris'.
 
two and a half men really? i mean have the judges watched this show once? i mean im sorry that show is just terrible.... not funny and most of all not original... playing off a child's naivety? i mean really, and to have this a repeat nom is just distasteful

The Emmys completely baffle me. The only think I can think of is it's the most popular straight comedy on television (DH being considered a dramedy I guess).
 
I love Buffy

And the only shows I watch on a regular basis that are nominated are Ugly Betty, Entourage, Project Runway, Kathy Griffin, & Top Chef ...

But good luck to Applegate & Neil P Harris..I like them
